Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Which books on ski touring do you recommend?

Does anyone know a book and/or website I could recommend to first-time/aspiring ski tourers, which covers things like technique up and downhill, gear, safety and avalanche stuff, an overview of routes, hut life and so on? Ideally, it should be published/produced in the UK and available in a reasonably recent edition.

The reason - I've written a piece about ski touring for a UK adventure travel mag and they've asked me to suggest some 'further reading' for the fact box. At home I have a couple of Cicerone guides, one for eastern Alps and one for western, and they are excellent, but their focus is more on routes than practicalities and I wonder if there's something even more suitable out there. The more general titles on Amazon seem to be US focused (not that there should be that much difference but as most Brits will ski tour in Europe it makes sense to suggest a title that's Europe-focused if possible).

Websites - the most useful touring-specific sites (in English) I have found belong to ski touring operators (eg Mountain Tracks and Zuba Ski). The Eagle Ski Club also has a decent section on touring. Are there any informative, non-commercial sites? I have a fair bit of stuff on my own site but nothing comprehensive enough to cite as 'proper' further reading...

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Just googled him and found profiles of him and fellow guides from Pro Guiding - reading about them makes me want to go to the mountains NOW...

What about travelogue-type books/accounts of tours - does anybody have recommendations or favourites? Not only for 'further reading' in the magazine but for me to do some further reading too.

Out of all the ski \ snow \ avalanche books I've bought, this one is probably the easiest (for me) to comprehend when I was prepping for my my Mountain Safety course:

A lovely, lovely book too.

MountainMaid, "Off Piste" by Wayne Watson has lots of good info on the topics you mention. Out of print now, but copies can, I believe, be bought direct from Wayne at Alpine Experience. Just checked on Ebay and there is one copy for sale at the moment.
