Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

August in the Cairngorms...

Met Office Mountain Forecast for the East Highlands:

Sunday, 28 August 2011

Cloudy and wet for many with gale to storm force winds, drier in the south.
Hazards Risk Explanation
Blizzards Medium Over highest summits
Heavy snow Low Over highest summits
Storm force winds High mean speeds around 75 mph and gust 100 mph

At 2pm +0.5c at the Summit of CairnGorm, dropped .3c at the mid-station since 2pm! Precipitation pushing in more to the Northern Cairngorms now, freezing level likely to be below the top of the higher Ben Macdui already judging by lapse rate on CairnGorm.

Any snow falling and lying is sadly 5 days to early for a September slide, to tick off month 23 in a row of having managed to ski somewhere on CairnGorm Mountain!

Unfortunately the photo happened after it had been thawing, still hasn't been clear to the tops on the webcams since. There is still snow on the plateau in Garbh Uisage Beag from last winter, but unfortunately it's on the Macdui side of the the Feith Buidhe watershed rather than the CairnGorm side. So far the 22 months sliding have been done entirely on CairnGorm Mountain. There is probably still snow from last winter in the Ciste Mhearaidh, but it's unlikely to be enough to permit 'linked' turns.

The clag hasn't really lifted so a planned sortie to suss out the potential for 1st September didn't go ahead. Possibly going to head up on the 1st with skis and if there is snow at the Ciste Mhearaidh, then result. If not some pre-season exercise and then it's back to sit and wait to see if we get a September snow fall. A hard frost and dusting would be enough to ski in the Marquis Wells and/or Ptarmigan Bowl area! Toofy Grin

A clear day on the Plateau on Thursday 1st September allowed CML to take this photo of Ben Macdui, showing the remaining drifts from the August blizzard on the high tops on Sunday 28th August. Reports of depths >50cm of fresh snow remaining in some of the drifts on Ben Macdui.

Meanwhile the old snow from winter 2010/11 just managed to survive into September in the Ciste Mhearaidh on CairnGorm Mountain, allowing the 23rd consecutive month of linked turns on the 'Gorm to be achieved withing a nail biting wait for September freshies!
