I barely bother waxing my skis but in principle all you are doing is adding a layer of wax over the ski base and to do so you just need to melt the wax enough to have it stick to the base sheet. Friction works for that, at least with any wax I've tried it with. Same is true for waxing skins (which is much more worthwhile). I don't know how well it compares with a hot wax though.
