It will be extra sucky for all the people with no roofs and chimneys, with great big cracks through their houses.
I reckon we will be cut off for a few days if the forecast comes right, got plenty of firewood and food though, so all good.

hang11, fair point - I did think of the Christchurch folk when I was making the post - but somehow didn't have my brain fully engaged when typing. OTOH if there are no roofs of some sort by now, are the houses concerned salvageable? Genuine question, not trying to make a point.

I think 10,000 homes aren't salvageable, but people are having to live in them, because they haven't had insurance payouts. Lots of houses with tarps instead of roofs - mainly because all the tiles got shaken off.
Also, very few houses in NZ have central heating, most people rely on firewood, and not many people have got chimneys left, so that kind of makes getting the fire on a bit difficult.
I've been told to expect a 2-3 year wait for the insurance assessment. Mine isn't that bad, the foundations have disintegrated at one end, so can't open doors or windows because it's moved, but totally liveable.
But friends of mine in the city have cracks in their external walls that are several inches wide. Insurance typically covers 6 months of rent, there is no way that any kind of permanent repair or rebuild will happen for a long time, due to continued significant aftershocks, and an absolute lack of inspectors and admin capacity at the insurers. So most people are staying put in knackered houses until they know what is happening.
This weather won't be fun. Plus the power network is held together with bits of sellotape, so the big power draw as a result of the cold will cause a lot of issues with power cuts.
It hit us last night, full on blizzard.
Still, no point complaining too hard, I just cleared my diary for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, going to be some epic turns to be had on the hills

It had a little melt today but that was the first bit of the storm. I've got about 20cm on top of my truck in the last couple hours.
Should be chaos tomorrow.
Queenstown gets lake level snow a few times most years. It's not that different to a normal storm here on the south island. The big difference this time is that north island cities are getting some, which is very unusual - and big news, because the media all live there!
Auckland got a couple of flurries today. They had a magnitude 2.0 earthquake a little while ago as well. I don't know how all the metrosexuals will cope. They're doing it tough. At least the exchange rate has got the price of Louis vuitton manbags a bit lower.

Love the Queenstown story - 20cm is enough to make the police issue warnings against any travel and shut the schools. Given that this is a town that makes its living as a ski resort it makes me feel a little better about the poor UK ability to cope with a little snow.

Generally, away from the media hype and BS, I reckon Blighty doesn't do too bad in coping with its irregular snowfall patterns.
There tends to be a distinct difference in attitude towards coping with a bit of extra weather way down in south Kiwiland. Generally, folks accept that in winter you will get some snow and they just get on with dealing with it when it arrives. And, as noted, they're not that well tooled up to coping with it either.
They don't blame the council or the Government or have a media that whips everyone into a complaining, self-loathing, nation-blaming frenzy about it. Mind you, there's also far fewer of them too which makes it easier to keep things moving...

In terms of the South Island population, nearly 500,000 of those people live in Christchurch, then another good chunk in Nelson and Dunedin, so effectively there's not many people anywhere else.
It's a cool place to live if you prefer a quiet life and like the great outdoors.
