Following on from the discussions re bucket lifts, and sideways facing detachable chairs - does anyone else have examples of oddball lisfts to offer us?
Sadly it's not there any more, but thishas to be my all time favourite:

hibernia, yes it literally did consist of modified city buses (no idea if any of them were a no 47!) suspended on a modified cable system originally used for logging. Presumably this is the origin of the Americans calling cable cars trams!?
alan empty, The "Skiway to Timberline" was about 3 miles long and ran between Government Camp and Timberline Lodge at Mt Hood, Oregon, for a couple of seasons in the early 1950's. However the cables apparently had a tendency to ice up, the buses sometimes struggled to get past the towers, and just as they built it a new road was opened which served the same route. As the shuttle bus on the new road cost only cost 50c, while the tramway cost 75c, but both took the same half hour to complete the journey, the tramway predicatbly proved to be a financial disaster.

Okanagan, and bizarrely the only things they call cable cars (in SF) look convincingly like what we'd call trams !
ps. before anyone points it out, I know they're pulled by cables running under the road.

I still think the weirdest lifts are those 'catapult' ones in Mexico I think it is - god they sound scary!!!!

crazy_skier_jules, You're thinking of the Va y Vient lifts at Portillo, Chile - and apparently they're building one at Cerro Catedral (Bariloche, Argentina). I have never ridden one but they do look pretty weird. Some small photos here:

No resorts (yet) in Mexico AFAIK - do you mean the Va et Vient slingshot lifts in Portillo, Chile?

What a shame all these marvellous, inventive lifts are no longer there - they'd make a fortune now as an attraction.

T-Dub, lol! There was a chair at La Clusaz which went upwards after you got off (or you went down the slope, put it that way) and it smacked you on the head if you didn't duck!!

Damn, I thought that fixed chairlifts were nasty to get on and off, but they sound positively evil!
