Hi,
I'm almost an intermediate level skier (happy with blue runs, working on my technique on red runs). I'm based near Leeds so I've been going to Xscape at Castleford for a few hours a week to get back into the swing of things.
I'm wanting to book some one-to-one private ski lessons with someone for an hour every couple of weeks so I can get some clear direction and then go off and practise on my own. I've searched all over and I cannot find a single private ski instructor other than the ones offered through Xscape but they cost £155 for one hour which is a bit pricey for me.
Just wondered if anyone had any suggestions.....
Many thanks,
Chris

ChrisKitchen, welcome to snowHeads. I think XScape only allow their own instructors to teach on a regular basis at Castleford.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I need to move to Castleford.
Bloody ridiculous price.
Go on holiday to real snow instead and book a private lesson for the day(s). It'll work out cheaper and far, far better in the long run. Something incidently that you need but don't get in a fridge.

I suspect that the instructor will get less than £20 of that.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

ChrisKitchen, frankly I think you'd be better going to a real resort for with real area where you can learn and consolidate your teaching. Les Deux Alpes springs to mind; less expensive than other major French resorts, and with excellent instruction form easiski- very well rated by many snowheads who have personal experience of her instruction. Unfortunately, she does not post here any more - but you can get in touch with her via her web site or Facebook

Or do both. Skiing indoors is not a replacement for skiing on the mountain, but doing regular training in the UK as the OP suggest can make a huge difference to your ability to get the most out of your occasional skiing holiday.

The price of indoor privates is basically the operators saying they don't want to do them. I'd find a good value regular session like the ones kitenski suggests and you'll get decent enough tuition from a instructor who is likely to see you regularly.
Private lesssons can be good value outside but on an indoor slope any decent instuctor can handle 5 or 6 students of different abilities running laps.

if there are an good skiers out there that fancy sparing a couple of hours every fortnight to teach me (paid of course) just let me know :)Chris |
Chris, there are a few guys on here who teach at Castleford, I believe, as rob@rar says Castleford won't let non XScape instructors teach.....
If you fancy a trip down to Hemel or are there with work I had a very good session with rob@rar when I was considering going for my BASI L1......
You can see their rates and book etc here http://www.insideoutskiing.co.uk/

Thanks for the information Cathy and for the welcome message (you too Pedantica). I previously used ESF for private lessons when I was in Morzine but I felt that a lot of what I was trying to explain was lost in translation and the instructor took me from "skied a couple of times a few years ago but couldn't control myself on a blue run" to "this is quite a steep red run but it will be OK" in the space of 6 one hour lessons which meant I skipped some of the fundamentals and also knocked my confidence a little. I'm a pretty quick learner with not much fear but this was a little too far for me
I've just had a look on SkiSchool.co.uk and it looks great. I'm going for 2 weeks on my own so how many lessons would you recommend. I will be skiing every day so I was thinking of booking a 1hr private lesson every other day which will give me time to work on the instructor's recommendations. Does that sound reasonable?
Many thanks,
Chris

You know it makes sense.

ChrisKitchen, that sounds fine but, since you've got plenty of lead-in time, I'd perhaps be inclined to get in touch with the ski school, let them know how much your budget is and get them to suggest an effective timetable. By the way, I think Tim Scott of LGS also comes highly recommended by others on the forum (I personally haven't skied with him, only with Tim Jackson).

ChrisKitchen, I'd send them an email about your circumstances and see what they'd recommend. They may have a small group you could join for example. Personally I'd suggest 2 hour sessions each time - one hour, you've just got started and it's time to finish

Another vote for Tim Jackson. But.....get in touch soon. AKAIK LGS have two instructors in Morzine and two in Les Gets (both the Tims).

ChrisKitchen, my husband and I had a three hour private lesson with Tim Scott in March and would highly recommend him. He was even teaching our daughter that week and she came on leaps and bounds.
