Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

resorts from Grenoble

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
looking at flights to Grenoble, don't know any of the resorts around there such as Alpe d'Huez (one hour), Brides Les Bains (one hour), Les Deux Alpes (one hour), La Toussuire (one hour 30 mins), Notre Dame de Bellecombe (one hour 30 mins), Meribel (one hour 30 mins), Megeve (one hour 30 mins), Les Menuires (one hour 30 mins).

Any recommendations appreciated for a family of 4 (2 teenage girls) looking for good ski-ing (good long reds, few blacks, etc) and good slope access, no need for nightlife really.

Thanks snowHead snowHead snowHead

simonx, Alpe D'Huez and Les Deux Alpes are the easiest major resorts to get to from Grenoble. An hour is probably a bit optimistic but 90 minutes or so by car, a little longer by transfer bus. Both have a good selection of runs of all types, Alpe D'Huez has a few more miles, Les Deux Alpes slopes are possibly a little tougher and it's more snowsure, it's also a cheaper resort. Both would suit I think

simonx, you could try Chamrousse which is 30km from Grenoble, and is actually closer to Grenoble airport I think which is south of Grenoble. (maybe it is closer to the youth hostel which is south of Grenoble)

There is a fair bit of nightlife in Alp d'Huez, Les Deux Alps, and Meribel, there might be less in Chamrousse being so close to Grenoble. More likely to get day trippers from the youth hostel in Grenoble going there (although I hear there are buses which go for day trips to Alp d'Huez and Les Deux Alps as well).

Grenoble University is quite large, and there are a lot of students who use this bus service for day trips.

I would prefer Brides les Bains from your list, mainly because the prices are cheaper (particularly the apres ski). There is a large casino there which has some entertainment as well. The last time I was there (in the casino), a French school group of teenagers were in having a karaoke session. (very entertaining)

Grenoble airport is North of the city, but Chamrousse is still probably the closest suggested so far - there is also Villard de Lans (which I've not been to for over a decade, so can't say what it's like now), which might be a slightly shorter drive, with scenic options through the Vercors. We had an excellent week in Chamrousse Feb this year - although we obviously repeated pistes quite a lot, that doesn't bother us, and we didn't feel a lack of miles of runs (the previous year we were in Montgenevre, and the three before that, Banff).

I like the views of Grenoble from the top of the runs, and we enjoyed watching the rescue exercise on the main gondola (filled with Chasseurs Alpin, who were then rescued by helicopter, or by being lowered from the cabins).
