Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

The ultimate off-off-piste event? The Red Bull X-Alps starts 1 August

I guess this is the ultimate antithesis to Hannibal's crossing of the Alps (on elephants that certainly wouldn't fly):

On Monday 1 August, 17 paraglider pilots will assemble on the summit and glacier of the Dachstein (in Austria) and commence a 800km flight-and-trek across the Alps - finishing in Monaco. On the way, they will fly from the summits of the Zugspitze (Germany's highest mountain) and Mont Blanc (Western Europe's summit).

As the organisers say, the rules are simple:

"Fly as far as possible in the turbulent air high over the Alps, land safely, walk most of the night with a 20-kilo pack containing the paraglider, sleep as little as possible, hike 1500M up a peak (always with the glider!) for “breakfast”, launch, repeat until reaching the ocean in Monaco 800 km later. Go!"

The British team of two comprises Aidan and Jan Toase. Aidan, who will pilot the paraglider while Jan handles the logistics on the ground, says:

I am hopelessly addicted to paragliding, when flying you are always moving between fear, hope and joy. One minute you're up with the clouds and feeling like the king of the world, the next second you scratching close to a cliff desperately looking for air currents which might take you up again or places to land.
