Poster: A snowHead
|
A forum contributor to Scottish ski website Winterhighland.com reports that lifties at Castleford X-scape snowdome have removed snow from their lift tracks to comply with health and safety regulations.
'Alpine Skier UK' claims that he tried to ski 'off-track' to use a parallel strip of snow (thus avoiding the plastic matting on the track) and was told by the lifties not to do this. He had good reason - he wanted to save the soles of this own skis!
Here's his report, and the thread concerned.
Can anyone throw any further light on this? It's hardly in Castleford's own interests, because their rental skis are going to suffer.

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

Interesting.
I know that at MK, they don't like you skiing off-track, but I think that is for the simple reason that the support pillars and walls are close to the lift, so if you decided to ski 20cms off the main track, and don't get back in line on time, you will be dragged into a pillar, so from that point of view, they have a valid reason.
Also, at MK, while the snow at the lifts may sometimes be wearing thin, and there is matting underneath, it is not a case of skiing on matting the whole way up the lift.
I'll be interested to read the guy's post of the response he gets from the bosses of Xscape.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

(Then again, the guy who made this post has just riled me...
I went to his website, entitled "Dry Slope Ski-ing (UK)", and to a couple of pages on the site: UK Dry Ski Slopes and UK Indoor Ski Slopes. Both contain clickable maps of Great Britain and the Isle of Man.
That's a new definition of UK to me)

Mmmm, I had a similar experiance with the lifties at Castleford as I was using the snow on the outside (the other side from the pylons). But they had the decency to point out that it was because there are small round plastic covers with raised screwheads just below the snow on that side. They look like lights or small inspection chambers.
I just used the inside snow after that - no problems.

You'll need to Register first of course.

Hehe, if they want to keep in compliance with HSE they should try keeping the slope from being littered with screws and bolts!
My ski's after a few months are in a right mess on the base. Skiing in Scotland this year was kinder to my skis.

marc gledhill, The lifties also don't like you going up the outside of the mat for safety reasons as it blocks the top lifties view down the poma as if someone falls they have to hit the stop button. They've never had a problem with me going up the inside of the mat.
