Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Should we expect to be able to ski in the Alps in December and April?

paulio, Please get your terminology right. If you want to wind up our bagpipe wearing, kilt eating friends north of the border you should refer to Scotch skiing.

The Scotch don't like being referred to as Scotch.

Boredsurfing,
Whilst we have skiid over Christmas for the past 5 years and found 2006 the worst (hard packed underneath a thin layer & loads of ice), we could ski all years to date, albeit have to go higher in poor years (Val Thorens).
We have now skiid the last 2 years in April and have managed some high skiing both years (Paradiski, Tignes & 3 Valleys), although this year was tougher, which forced us higher up to Val Thorens but we could still find good snow and relatively open pistes with fewer crowds.
Whilst there is a risk of poor snow going at these two extremes, we have managed good skiing on the whole and have relied upon their pisters efforts and the snow cannons to maintain links & lower runs.
The benifits is that we can still ski within the school holidays and avoid the 1/2 term mass exidous to the slopes.

I'd see April as a safer bet than December in general

Indeed. Even if the snow quality is better in Dec (ie. pow) the coverage is so thin you can destoy a good pair of skis rapid style.
