Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Boilerplate carnage today at Grands Montets

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
So, with conditions getting more desperate each day here in Chamonix, there are large parts of the remaining open pistes that I just don't ski on any more. It's safer off-piste, even though the bumps there are rock hard.

However, many new arrivals have to learn the hard way Toofy Grin

Here's a little footage shot handheld on my phone today over the course of about 10 minutes. That is not snow you see on the piste, it is the top layer of the boilerplate that has been scraped off by skis and boards...

Smokin Joe, Compagnie du Mont Blanc will probably ban me for life if I submitted that!

ww166no, around midday is the best time for that particular section. You need a few hours of people scraping the top, bashed layer off, exposing the ice. However, very first thing in the morning is best for the top sections of both the Bochard and the Combes for slidey slidey.

Yep me, with the edges on my skis combined with my weight I'd probably be ok, on soft slush I'm definitely not ok. I've managed on blue ice before so boiler plate has no fears for me Laughing

Zero-G, first thing in the morning is best for pulling the duvet over your head or if feeling particularly energetic, having an espresso in the sunshine. . . noon, however might just fall within my viewing arc, are you selling tickets?

ww166no, I have a deck chair staked out at that spot - it's yours for 30 minutes for a fiver. Coffee optional.

Yuck that stuff looks like the super slick hardpack that nothing but probably an FIS legal WC tech tuned race ski will grip on. Great vid though Very Happy

Spring skiing = wait until stuff has softened up.

I did - hence the eye-jiggling shaky quality (iPhone's aren't the easiest devices to stabilise). I was late today and by the time I got there, even that piste was slush (it was a blazing hot day today).

If the weather cools down again, then I'm sure there will be more entertainment to come.

That's brilliant - made me laugh my head off.

How steep is it there - it looks quite flat but I'm guessing it isn't.

Is that the pitch just where the short chair kicks out? if so its always slick even in much better snow years.

It's an average Chamonix red run, so steeper than it looks in the vid.

Why, thank you Hurtle!
