Just back from St Johann and there was no smoking allowed in the hotel, but some huts on the mountain were 100% smoking and some had sections that were a bit pointless as the smoke could drift anywhere.
What are the rules?

No smoking anywhere indoors in Switzerland, seems to be observed 100%.

No smoking in public places (railway stations, airports etc) in France. No smoking in shops/offices/cafes/restaurants/bar tabac indoors or on closed terraces. Only really enforced indoors, not on terraces. Not sure what the case is of enclosed terraces with open roof as you see in ski resorts.

I should have read it first  Wonder what they will do in Netherlands if/when a European wide ban is legislated.
Best smoking ban I've seen was in Banff, Alberta, Canada - no smoking in any public place or within so many meters of a public place, even if it was outside. So no smoking on outside balconies, lift queues, lifts etc.

Just back from Austria, ashtrays provided everywhere (hotel, bars, food huts, etc). In the hotel most English guests will refrain from smoking near kids but in the bars even the 14 year olds are smoking away! The none smokers in our group had no issue with the smoke in the bars and did even comment on how good the atmosphere was!

To stray off topic a little, we had a discussion about town centre violence and was wondering if assults have risen since the UK smoking ban as nicertine addicts could be more on edge if someone knocked them as they walked past or as strangers stand outside eyeballing each other. The bars in Austria seemed so relaxed I couldn't help but think it was due to being allowed to smoke even the french seem stressed in comparison!

manicpb, I did a quick google on that - in Preston (2008) after the ban, city centre crime went down but domestic violence went up.

When we were in Selva at Christmas, Goalies bar had a smoking section inside, needless to say we only went in once, really strange to walk into a so called Irish pub, and be hit by the rancid stale tobacco smell of days gone by. (Posted by a Reformed intolerant ex-smoker)

I know you can make stats say whatever you want but I wouldn't be surprised if there is an element of truth in that report.

Here in Austria they have banned smoking in restaurants etc but the small umbrella type bars are allowed to choose to ban smoking or not! Hence they all allow smoking as they are afraid of losing trade. They certainly lose plenty from the non smokers!

During our stay in St Johann, we mainly socialised in our hotel as it was 100% non smoking, but on the last evening went for a pint. (Think the place was called Bunnys). It had 50% smoking and 50% non smoking areas. We choose the non-smoking side, but it was very quiet compared to the smoking side which was packed and looked very smoky. The 2 areas were seperated by a kitchen area, which still allowed the smoke to drift trhough! So we went back to the hotel.
