We're travelling from South Wales to Ashford tomorrow afternoon (leaving Wales at 2pm), that will put us at the M25 somewhere around 4pm. Does anyone think it's worth going further south than the M25 or should we just grin and bear it on the M25? I've never experienced delays on the M25 on previous occasions although we've never tried rush hour on a Friday.

That's a bit like asking if it will snow in Resort X next January, isn't it
Personally, I'd just get on the M25, make sure you've got plenty of fags and the radio tuned in, and just get on with it. Most alternative routes will have you snaking around on various A-roads that will more likely be worse than better.

I did that route a fortnight ago (leaving mid wales at noon). I came off at Bracknell (?), down the A329 (M), jumped on to the M3 to the M25 and then M26 to M2?M20 (can never remember which is which).
It was quite busy around Leatherhead but nothing too bad at all really. Got to my destination at 5.

The bad bit is normally between the A3 and the M3. In both directions, but especially clockwise (i.e. on your way back).

M20
I'd hit the M25. A329M detour to cut off the corner doesn't really save much IME.

TotallyBoard, I'd say stick to the M25 too - I always figure that most of the people on that road are regulars, and if there were a better way, they'd be on it. And it would be just as busy. The secret of the M25 is not to leave it till the last minute, so you are in a rush, and not to get in a faff if you hit hold ups.

Does anyone know what the actual drive time from Wales to Folkstone Eurotunnerl is? Google says 6 hours and a number of other providers have a varying range of times?
Ball park on a summer saturday anyone?

Fattes13, it rather depends on how far you are away from the M4

Fattes13, From Cardiff traffic willing 3.5 hours, got a feeling that leaving at 2pm from Bridgend we'll be lucky to do it in 5

Fattes13 You will only be able to tell us the "actual" drive time when you have done the journey as this varies for every journey
However, Saturday afternoon is not prime time for either the M4 or the M25 so in my experience you would generally be OK regarding sheer volume of traffic and would be able to drive along happily at the legal speed limit (or whatever level of law breaking you feel comfortable with) thereby being able to calculate you journey time by distance/speed.
Given your location I assume you actually mean Fishguard to Eurotunnel. In my experience it is always really slow from the port as the ferry unloads and you all drag along at the speed of the slowest man at the front with little chance to overtake. Once you hit the motorway for real you should be OK.

From where I am, mile or so from both M4 and 329M, I'd never think about using M4 to go south on M25.
M329M - Bracknell - Bagshot M3.

Yup, M4 goes in a big loop north after J10, and the M25 between M4 and M3 is often slow
Bracknell is fine except 5 on weekdays

Fattes13 Holyhead is a totally different matter. Surely you'll be A55, M6, M1, M25 M20. Nowhere near the M4/A329 at all (I'll have to save my opinion on that with allanm for another thread.
350 odd miles in 7 hours with a couple of breaks should be achievable.

Fattes13, lol you do know you're talking about an area the size of Wales here? If you end up on the M4 from Holyhead you've taken a wrong turn

They'd done some work on the A329(M) since I've last done that route and it seemed much faster than before - they've sorted out a few of those silly bottleneck roundabouts before you hit Bracknell (from M4 direction).
Time-wise, I did Elan Valley to Dartford x-ing in 5.5 hours including stopping at Hereford, Cirencester and Clackett Lane for a few minutes each time.

I thought this was going to be a Verbier thread....I was going to have to report that since Fontennay is closed now there is no avoiding the M25 except by downloading the Funispace!

Fattes13, m6 toll, m6, A14, M11, A12 (blackwall tunnel), M20
a journey I could recite backwards... My best time from bottom of M11 to Bangor 4.25 hours, worst time 6.5 hours. 4.25 means c.90 mph all the way and 1 stop, so big bladders and light traffic are essential. You have an extra 30 mins in Wales and an extra 90 in Kent so if you do it 6 hours I will buy you a beer. 8 hours is more like it.

If you have smart phone with google maps, that is a good way too keep an eye on the traffic and its generally upto the minute on its info.
