Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Transfer times

Reading through ski brochures they all say 3valleys is 3hours transfer from geneva.Last year our driver did it in approx 2 and no he was not driving like Schumacher. The brochures say les arcs is 3 hours and tignes is 4 hours is it possible to do it in less .The reason I ask is because we are looking at an early flight out and late flight home so we can ski on both transfer days .Yes I know we should stay closer to geneva but we are worried about snow conditions close to geneva .Resorts quite low with exception of avoriaz any recommendations of high altitude resorts closest to geneva

On good days, possibly on most days, the transfers are as you found last year. But there are lots of narrow roads between the three valleys and the airport. It only takes a bit of road works or a traffic accident or a bit of bad weather and the transfer times can increase significantly. So the tour operators must be cautious on the times they allow for their airport transfers.

Mumof2, Google Maps is your friend:

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&tab=wl

It suggests 2.5 hours to Tinges, but I seem to recall 3 hours or so when in a coach\mini bus.

Mumof2, it's the same as flight times, they add on a bit to increase the margin of error and make the stats look better. It's possible, but not probable, to ski same day in 3V from Geneva, but if you're going package then a wait at Geneva for other flights to come in is very likely and you'll get very frustrated if you've geared up in your mind for a bonus afternoon on the slopes. Fly to Chambery if possible. Last year we got early flight to Chambery, coach departed on time, we got to Mottaret for 12.30 and hit the slopes at 1.30. No way on earth would this have been possible if using Geneva. Beware Chambery can close easily in bad weather, but this year that probably won't be an issue...

In answer to the OPs question; yes you probably can do it quicker and most likely you will do.

However, if there is a holdup and you miss your flight do you want the responsibility/liability for getting back to the UK?

Also, have you booked a "private transfer" so that just you and your group are on the transport from resort to airport or have you booked the lowest possible price and therefore booked a "shared transfer".

If you've booked a "shared" then you have taken a cost benefit from allowing the transfer operator to subsidise your transfer by filling up the transport with other fare paying passengers.

We used to quote and operate on pick up from resort at least 3 hours before the clients flight.

Many would argue saying; I've all ready checked in on line, it only takes an hour blah blah blah

We wouldn't relent and still pick up at least 3hours before departure as there are so many things out of the transfer companies control.

There are topics elsewhere on delays at tolls on the A40 and yes you can be delayed by an hour?

So if we were to relent and say "oh ok, we'll pick you up 2hours before the flight"... you have to be at the gate half an hour before the flight so that gives the transfer company only an hour and half to get you there...... then there's a delay at the tolls.. suddenly you have now missed your gate closure and flight....... or even not that extreme.... on the transfer down the mountain the transport gets stuck behind a slow driver... suddenly the 30mins to get to the autoroute has become an hour.......

Whereas, at 3 hours we know there's some slack and we can cope with any eventuality and you will not miss your flight... even if the transport were to break down we have a continency to get you there on time.

any recommendations of high altitude resorts closest to geneva- Chamonix, there are some excellent smaller resorts closer to geneva altitude is not everything when it comes to snow conditions. If you are really keen on the 3v then chambery airport is the one to use for quick transfer.

Simplest solution of you want to ski on first and last day in the 3V (or elsewhere) - get the train or drive yourself!

Given those flight times I would have thought you could plan to arrive in resort at 12:45.. so depending on how focussed you are on getting on the slopes you will feel snow under skis by 14:00.

Getting home I guess your transfer will be leaving at 17:00.... if you allow an hour and a half to faff (return skis, change, get bags etc etc) after you get off the slopes then that's skiing until 15:30.

Mumof2, are you staying in a chalet again? they are often good about facilitating skiing on first and last day, but if you rent an apartment it will probably be in after 4 pm and out before 10 am. When are you going? If not booked yet, why not wait and see whether, and where, there is any snow in the next few weeks?

Chambery is superb on a quiet weekday. We flew into Chambery on a Thursday just over two weeks ago and were driving away from the airport (our car was parked there) within 6 minutes of touch down. However, although it was brilliant sun up in the mountains there was quite a heavy inversion fog down in Chambery - as we descended we only caught sight of the lake, very murky, at the last minute. I felt we'd been quite lucky to get down - we drove with full headlights on (as did everybody else) along to Albertville. As soon as we started climbing up into the mountains the weather was incredibly bright and clear. chambery is a gamble, but terrific when it worked (the only time we were ever booked to fly in there on a package holiday we were diverted to Lyon).

If keen to get away and have that extra skiing time, book a private transfer taxi or hire a car.
