Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski Boots

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
My mum has big calfs she finds the boots that are the right size for her foot (mondo size 24.5) are to tight round her calves. So I was wondering if you get ski boots with wider openings (top bit, not sure what the name is)?

My missus has big calfs but doesn't have a problem. Has your mum had this problem with several pair of boots?

Silky, basic answer = yes.
Different manufacturers produce differently shaped boots and some have a bigger cuff than others. A decent boot fitter should be able to find something suitable but may not be able to adequately alter whatever your Mum has at present (it's not clear from your post if she has her own boots or rents).
If she's looking to buy, a lot of snowHead s recomment Colin (CEM on this forum) at http://www.solutions4feet.co.uk/ who is based in Bicester (North of Oxford).
If she is not within striking range of him, let us know what area she lives in, and somebody on the forum may well know a good bootfitter local to you.

PS my wife has the same problem, and has at times in the past been in agony for the very same reason. Now skis all day without any boot-fiddling Very Happy

I believe that women have different shaped calves than men, hence the reason for this problem. Specifically, I think their calves are lower than men's, which is one reason for female-specific boots Smile

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Thanks for all the help.

Try Head Edge boots they are good for wide feet and big calves, the guys at Skee-tex in Essex have good boot fitters.

most boots only have female specific liners (fur/colour etc and sometimes a lower cut calf area) but the shells on the majority of boots are justsmaller sizes in unisex models, the manufacturer may add a cuff flare or give a heel lift in the box but they are predominently the same as the mens model

i didn't see wide feet mentioned anywhere in the opening post

the most important thing is to get the fit a good as possible on the foot, a good boot fitter can adjust the cuff of most boots to make it fit the calf, no point having a boot which fits in the calf and having the foot rattle around inside the shell
