Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Stubai Glacier April

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
3 of us going to Stubai glacier in April and could do with some info......
Would anyone advise staying in Innsbruck and getting the bus to the glacier each day?
Would it be better having a car to get around ?
Would it be better to stay in Neustift, although we wanted Innsbruck for the apres !
Any tips most welcome.
Thanks a lot.....!

The bus from Innsbruck will take ages - as I recall it's about 30 mins or more to get to Neustift then a further 30-40 mins to the glacier. A car will make it a lot easier as you can get to the glacier in about 25 mins. Neustift is absolutely gorgeous but is generally fairly sleepy in nature - though there could well be a few folk about in April.

Stubai glacier is excellent though - and will have a lot of skiing available at the that time of year.

If apres ski is high on your list of priorities, have you considered Mayrhofen/Hintertux? Village to glacier is definitely do-able there - about 30 mins commute,

Hiya

Stayed in Neustift for a week at the end of April 2010

Neustift very nice village with great walks up and down the valley. Not so much in the way of Apres ski at that time, more sitting outside of cafes in the Sun!

Was about 15 mins to the Stubai glacier on the very regular ski bus.

Conditions would always change from sun and 10 degrees (or more) in the valley to beautiful sub zero on the glacier

The snow conditions were superb in late April on the Glacier, with fresh snow throughout most of the week

Most of the Apres ski was either up on the glacier from lunchtime or at the base where the 2 gondolas leave from

Was great to get an empty Easyjet flight there, with no Q's. the baggage was on the carousel before we got through passport control and you arrive in the hotel within 20 mins from the airport

Highly recommend as a late destination and the skiing for a glacier was actually very good!

Cheers

Rich

- No, it really is bit of a long ride. Ok for a day but I would not want to do it every day

Would it be better having a car to get around ?
- Yes if you want to saty in Innsbruck and go to Stubai Glacier

Would it be better to stay in Neustift, although we wanted Innsbruck for the apres !
- Yes, and actually the apres is probably more 'traditional' because Innsbruck is a very big town and does not really have apres as such

Any tips most welcome.
- Have a look at Kuhtai too

immer schuss, if you are driving in the Stubai valley do be aware that the police have a series of manned speed traps with on the spot fines as well in the afternoon police stopping and breathalysing drivers on the way out of the valley (because a lot of people don't actually stay there overnight there can be a bit of a race up in the morning and people sometimes cannot resist a little apres drink before hopping into the car to drive back down agin). All good and sensible and I'm sure would not be an issue, but just to point it out.

It's a bit of a treck on the bus each day tbh. Also tbh there is no real apres in Innsbruck, although the nightlife is good. Neustift is nice - wasn't all that sleepy when I stayed there for a few days in November, one bar was pretty lively anyway. Btw the Sport Hotel in Neustift is awesome, best sauna/wellness area I've ever seen.

We've stayed here on our last two trips - spotless accommodation, great value price, in the centre of the village:

Both times (June and November) we've just turned up and got a room.

Thanks again,we are booked now and flying to Innsbruck and staying in Fulpmes in a small hotel.
I think we can get a train/tram from Innsbruck.
We will probably hire all gear at Glacier Valley station and leave it there.
Roll on April !

immer schuss, good choice, and depending on snow there is even a local slope in Fulpmes called Schlick 2000 which is quite fun on a bad visibility day as an alternative to the glacier !!
