Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Scandinavian team attempts to ski Laila Peak for the first time.

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead

Two intrepid Scandinavian skiers are currently attempting an ascent of Laila Peak, a 6614m mountain in Pakistan said to be the most beautiful in Asia and then to make their descent on skis.
According to the local people in Hushe there have been only two successful climbs of Laila Peak, a total of only seven people have summited and no-one has skied it before...

Full story from mounteverestnet Scroll down to the third photograph for a larger view of this very impressive peak. At the bottom is a link to a previous story about the expedition and another to Fredrik Ericsson's own web site (Flash) from which latest news of the attempt yesterday.....

2.30 in the morning, with a clear sky and almost full moon, we left our tent and started climbing. Seven hours later, only a hundred meters off the summit, we found the conditions too icy. It was not possible to ski in those conditions so we turned around. We put on our skis and as first ever we skied the steep north-west face of Laila Peak. It was 1500 vertical meters of 45 degrees snow face down to the Gondogoro Glacier. Even though the conditions where terrible this must count as one of my most interesting and exciting ski runs. The weather forecast looks good for the next few days so we will go for another try to reach the summit of Laila Peak before we head off to Gasherbrum.

Good luck to them both.

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person
Well it seems they didn't quite manage to summit ....

We also made a second attempt on the mountain four days after our first, hoping that the conditions would have changed. It had not. There was still too icy on the top of the mountain to make it possible to ski.

We will now rest in our camp for a few days, waiting for porters, before heading over the Gondogoro pass and on to Gasherbrum Base Camp and new adventures.
but they did manage another set of first tracks

It was more than 1500 vertical meters down to the bottom. With the almost 50 degrees steep slope we had
to concentrate on every turn not to make any mistake. The icy conditions turned into solid snow and we could relax and enjoy the skiing. Not every day you can check out the majestic K2 when you’re cruising the ski slopes. A long and exciting ski run ended on the Gondogoro glacier where our friend and cook Muhammad Ali served us some snacks. A perfect ending on a
great ski.

They have succeeded in climbing Gasherbrum 2 - 8035m - and skiing down.

The slopes on Gasherbrum 2 is fairly steep and broken up by lots of seracs and crevasses making it very interesting skiing. One month, lots of vertical meters of climbing and an unforgettable ski run. Two happy guys are now back in Base Camp eating and resting, looking forward to the Scandinavian summer.
