Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski Jacket and Ski Pants advice please! (well i need everything else too!)

Poster: A snowHead
Hi Guys,

Am going for my first ski holiday at the end of March- to Les Arcs. Cant wait!! I have spent some time on the dry slope and become totally hooked. This is for life man!!! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Have gone to snow and rock and will get fitted with some decent boots. However- they seem v expensive for other gear. Im happy to spend some decent money on kit which will last- but there doesn't seem any point if i can buy things like jackets and pants online cheaper.

Im totally dazzled by how many brands there are- and what to look for. Anyone have any specific models which they know to offer great performance:price ratio???

Whilst im not totally vain- i wanna look pretty pimp too- so dark lower colours with black and white top or perhaps a nice blue jacket would be a bonus Very Happy

A few jacket ideas???

http://www.snowandrock.com/columbia-men's-patrol-jacket/ski-jackets/ski-snowboard-outdoor-sports/fcp-product/14414

http://www.snowandrock.com/eider-men's-adib-jacket/ski-jackets/ski-snowboard-outdoor-sports/fcp-product/13541

http://www.snowandrock.com/columbia-men's-black-ice-ii-jacket/ski-jackets/ski-snowboard-outdoor-sports/fcp-product/14412

Budget? Mid range i would say. £150-£200 for a jacket, £100-150 for pants.

Any advice would be great

Cheers Guys Very Happy Very Happy

Get yourself down to TKMaxx. Save yourself a packet. If you're going for your first ski holiday, there is a chance you won't like it, you won't get on with it, and then you'd have spent hundreds on stuff you really don't need.

£35 is plenty enough to get a good quality pair of dark trousers - nobody will notice what trousers you are wearing, and the expensive brands seem to last just the same as the cheap ones.

What Monium said, but call in at your local Aldi on the way and see if they have any of the skiwear offer stuff left in your size (my local branch has loads still) , the softshell trousers are great value and look no different to any other black softshells, haven't used the adult jackets (have the softshell jackets which are great) but it looks really goodfor very little cash and the kids stuff is certainly good

no way will I loose interest. Not a chance. Smile

Will check out aldi although I won't hold my breath........

The prob with to max is how do I know what I'm buying is any good? I'm all for buying good stuff cheaper, but I'm not a fan of buying cheap stuff even more cheaply :s

There really doesn't seem to be any specific buyers info on the net, where it summaries the best mid range model :s

35 quid ski pants do appeal.......but I'm pretty skeptical tbh :s unless they are 100 in other shops

Sorry, but if you genuinely believe that something costing more makes it a better product, then you are either a snob or an idiot. £35 ski pants that will last for years, and they're down to £19.99 at the moment: http://www.skiwear4less.com/acatalog/Dare_2b_Mens_Elevation_V_Pant.html

If you want to buy £35 ski pants for £100, I can sell you mine. Does that help with the problem?

Look on e-bay, I got a Genuine Helly Hansen ski jacket for £32 and a pair of Killy Salopettes for £29.

I dont think the salopettes had even been worn, the HH Jacket had but was in good nick and after i washed it and nix waxed it its as good as new.

The only thing i have spent full price on is my ski boots, but i did not buy a pair till i had three ski trips under my belt.

TOP TIP do be very careful if tempted to buy a SPYDER jacket on flea bay.

I wear a Keela shell jacket bought from admin. Good in all weathers from blizzard to spring conditions. Not a fashionistas item - but low cost and very good.

They don't even look good! What chump would buy those. I guess the same chumps that are buying white one-piece suits with fur edged hoods and a helmet with a visor on it - as seen in Courchevel 1850, several times, on different people.

Hi therebilly_boy_2010, Here is what I have been using for the last few years. Cheapish but lasts.

Boots Lange concept 95
http://shop.backcountryuk.com/lange-concept-95---custom-fit---in-stock-6166-p.asp
Bought in glasgow ski n boardroom for 110pounds

Sallopettes Columbia Titanium
http://www.calusa-surf-ski.co.uk/COLUMBIA-TITANIUM-CANAL-STREET-PANT-IN-BLACK-143.asp
Bought in Blacks for 50 pounds

Helly hansen stripy base (TKmaxx) tenner

Smartwool socks blues ski shop 12pounds

Cobalt midlayer fleece, tkmaxx

Haglofs paclite thin gortex jacket
100 pounds in climbing shop sale

I would not go overboard at all. I think it is better to spend the money on boots and skis rather than €400-500 jackets.

But the golder rule from above is to shop around.
Cheers

I can testify that cheap brands are in no way worse than more expensive after buying some new salomon salopettes this season and after just one week they have cuts all over them from only a few (minor) wipe outs. Compare these 200pound pants to my girlfriends 3year old Dare2B salopettes which are still going strong, a little worn around the seams, but more importantly - no holes in the gortex.

Oh, and I heartily recommend Aldi thermals too. Just about as perfect as they can be. If not, Cotswolds had a sale on not so long ago (not sure if it's still going) for Some HH merino thermals for pretty cheap.

Wow- lots of great advice here Smile

S2AS looks good- but im a skier, not a boarder and they are all a bit puffy and teenagerish for me. Thanks for the link though!

My plan:

1) Go to Aldi and get a few thermals

2) Check out TK max- probably get some £35 trousers! Look at the jackets and base layers too.

3) Glasgow cyclops- wow- you found some excellent deals there! Was this this year? Or a few years ago? I fear i may be too late to buy decent gear in the sales Sad

DO NOT SPEND MONEY in Snow & rock or EB etc. As a beginner borrow stuff, or buy in TK max, Aldi etc.

If you look around several tk maxx's you will kit yourself out for under £200 easy. Forget dear selopetes. This year I got the miss us for her first ski holiday:

Carrera Goggles £25

Roxy Quicksilver Coat £30

Surfanicbselopetes £35

Ski Gloves £10

All last seasons stock, but the same coat on bay was £110 still! Admittedly the mens coats are dearer, but these are all still designer stuff. S&R isn't too bad either really....you cam get smart Westbeach jackets for around £130 if you wanna look 'pimp'.

Good luck! Cool

And if you buy the yellow ones, at least when your skiing career comes to an end, you'll be able to audition for the TV show 'Trawlermen'.

I don't think higher cost necessarily means better equipment but youre either a cheapskate or an idiot to think that people who pay more than £35 for trousers are snobs or idiots. Go to TKMaxx or get in touch with Scotia... He's literally up to his neck in gear and could do with some money to buy a birthday present as Im probably going to forget to.

billy_boy_2010, I bought most off season.

Wher eare you in the UK?
Some additional stuff. Rossi Zenith 10´s £300 great ski.
Helmet Demon Shell bought from a surf shop on ebay for £14 however, I´ve just tried on a salomon ranger custom air helmet and it it very nice.
Scott poles online from shop on liverpool £8 plus £2 post
Versant nord gloves £35 down from £70.

In a nutshell I´d think along these lines. What do I need to protect. Broken arms are okay but a broken head is not so get a good quality properly-fitting helmet. Comfot here is paramount.
Get a decent base later and a thin paclite jacket to deflect the wind. then chose either 1 or two layers in between.

Lidl handwarmers £1 but a decent set of gloves is essential. Cold exposed hands are not nice. THe legs and body temp will probably take care of themselves because the muscles are working hard, but static hands wrapped around a pole are not and will get cold if you dont have a good glove. Or mits (BUT THATS ANOTHER THREAD) Happy

Trousers... Anything if the temp is cold. Gortex to stop the wet and cold bum if the temp is not too cold. Happy Anything goes with black. Happy

Boots. Spend your money here. I got mine really cheap because another shop around the corner had a 1/2 price sale. So I said.... well your boots are perfect but I can get head boots for £100 round the corner. They immediately discounted.

Skis.... Rossi Zeniths bought for £300 last december in a shop that was stopping doing rossi skis. Happy

Back to work now Happy

I took peoples advice and went pretty cheap really

Mounting warehouse had a big sale on, bought gortex type jacket and trousers, 100% merino wool base layers, and gloves all at a good price.

That just leaves mid layer clothing, helmet and goggles to go Smile

Thanks a lot for the advice guys, what a great forum!

Will have the boots fitted by a pro of course. Snow and rock OS the only place close to me

I just bought a Tog24 Zorin softshell yesterday for 60 quid. Very nice thin and light softshell. I suspect a base and one thik fleece undeneath will be fine.

billy_boy_2010, If you're after some pimpin' goggles then subscribe to Fall Line ski mag for like £28 and get some Scott Decree goggles free! Blue and green, loverrrrrly. They're about £60 in in the shops so a good deal and you have some toilet reading too.

Only advice for helmets is to go and try some on if you can then look online. I find Giro helmets to be really comfy as well as Poc but a bit pricey. K2 helmets are great (the rant/clutch) and have optional audio, they range from £45-85ish. Check out TK for midlayers! And Go Outdoors, they do Helly too.

Have fun in March!
