Sunshine Village in a bit of a pickle!

Seems that the management of Sunshine have got themselves in a bit of a tight spot.

It looks like the son of the owner skied a avy danger closed slope and got caught. patrol threw him off the hill. he told daddy and ski patrollers, many with vast experience on the hill, got sacked. the others all then phoned in sick and only enough turned up at work the next day to get 3 of the lifts operating....

from what i've read on the Sunshine Village facebook page, they're not doing themselves any favours!

Anyone know any more?

shoogly, I'm guessing that must be son of Ralph Scurfield the owner of Sunshine. Interesting because Ralph Scurfield lost his own father (also called Ralph) to an avalanche in 1985 so you'd think he'd have taken the opposite view. Always more to these things than meets the eye though - if it's a personnel issue they can't be going public with their side, meanwhile they are being flamed by ski patrol supporters.

that is a bit strange. maybe there's more to this than meets the eye and they've been instructed by their lawyers not to say anything. Sure it will all come out in the wash.

Bad time to happen though just when they've got tonnes of fresh snow and it's getting into proper ski holiday season, especially for europeans and probably australians travelling there to ski/board.

hope they get it all sorted out and the patrollers get their jobs back, if they would want them back!

one other question... is it the same family that own Lake Louise? I know that all the tickets come from Ski Big3.

No. Its not the same family. LL now owned by Charlie Locke again (think its Locke, can never remember his surname). He is quite a character and is on the hill a lot.

Son is due to race at Sunshine week after next. Hope they have enough patrollers out. Maybe that's why our club had their entry capped after 5 days of registration........

Yep LL is now Charlie Locke who split acrimoniously from his business partner Murray Edwards in RCR (think Locke might have had financial difficulties ???). I once heard that Locke was so astute that rather than buy burgers and steaks for Lake Louise he bought his own ranch/abbatoir to make more margin although this is possibly apochryphal.

Lake Louise Offers Free Skiing to Season Pass Holders of Other Alberta Resorts

January 24, 2011 – Lake Louise, AB. – As a result of unfavourable road, weather, and avalanche conditions at many resorts, Lake Louise is offering free skiing to all season pass holders of all Alberta resorts from Monday January 24th to Friday January 28th, 2011.
Charlie Locke, Proprietor of Lake Louise said “many season pass holders have been thwarted from skiing as much as they would like this season due to limited terrain openings, bad roads and cold weather.
Lake Louise, The Rockies’ biggest resort is wide open due to excellent work from our extremely experienced and highly valued snow safety team. Lake Louise is now easier, safer, and quicker to get to as a result of the twinning of the TransCanada Highway. When guests arrive, they will find plenty of parking within easy walking distance of the spacious base area lodge and they can travel from parking lot to peak in less than 10 minutes on either of our high speed base area lifts
“Since we have excess capacity during the week, we thought we would offer Albertans who have season passes at other resorts access to our lifts on a complimentary basis during this period” said Locke.
Discount Card holders from other Alberta resorts will also benefit as they will be entitled to a 33% ($25.00) discount off our regularly priced tickets and Lake Louise Season Pass holders will be able to buy a lift ticket for a friend at that same discounted price.

check out the thread on TGR, quite a bit of info about it. They have been using off duty firemen to work as ski patrol in places as they havent enough staff to fully open. Shocked

Pleased I'm not heading out that way at the moment.

I'm in Banff at the minute. I only know what I've heard speaking to people but themessages I got were that the staff went on strike over the sacking of some of the ski patrol staff.

Luckily I was @ LL on that day but I heard the buses picked up skiers as normal and dropped them off at the resort without mentioning anything about a closure. Perhaps they didn't know I guess. What I did think was a bit off was the staff on the ticket windows selling tickets at full price knowing that the resort was effectively closed and then offering the disgruntled customers a $20 voucher.

I think it stinks and I do feel for the local skiers & resort workers. What with this and the resort's attitude to the ski bus, it doesn't exactly make me want to rush to book a trip again to Banff when there are so many other great places to ski.

This is what has been posted on Sunshine's FB page and on TGR as the 'true story of events':

On December 19th one of Sunshine’s younger patrollers Charlie Hitchman noticed a group of young males in a closed area of the mountain. While getting them to exit the area they became abusive, and belligerent and saying “do you know who I am”. At one point the group actually threatened to do him physical harm. He had them escorted to the village where they were lectured about closures and had their ID’s checked, and VIP passes temporarily taken. It turns out the “don’t you know who I am” person was Thomas Taylor Scurfield son of Ralph Scurfield the owner. Taylor was home visiting from his first year at U Vic. His friends were younger I believe from Calgary. After the talking to they were allowed to return to skiing. This was special treatment, as normally they would have been escorted off of the property.

At no point were they treated in any way badly. In fact if he were not the owners son the group would have likely been escorted off of the property completely.

This obviously got back to Ralph and the parents of the other males.

On December 29th as staff were arriving for work there were extra security and cabs waiting at the Bourgeau Base area. Three of the main mountain operations managers, Chris Chevalier Mountain Operations Manager, Rowan Harper Snow Safety Supervisor, and Ben Chevalier Lift Operations Supervisor, as well as a senior patroller Chris Conway were terminated without warning, and with no just cause, escorted off of the hill into the waiting cabs and sent home.

In total about 88 years of experience was lost in a moment. These were people that dedicated themselves completely to this hill for most of their adult lives. They worked with a dedication and passion rarely seen anymore. They affected change in the industry, and turned Sunshine into the fantastic place it is. In their tenure there they set a work ethic that has shaped many young peoples lives, leading with compassion and by example. Working alongside their staff in any conditions. Countless lives were touched, helped, and saved by these people, and they did it all for the love of the mountain they called HOME. They grew up there, as did their children. They were working towards teaching the next generation to pass the torch to.

In the aftermath of this the remaining staff were left with no leadership, a lack of experience and the feeling they had lost their family. They were given no direction from upper management and no succession plan. Some were asked to take on roles they knew they were not yet ready to fill, and they were worried. The management asked them to trust them, but there was no feeling of trust left and as they waited they felt that there was still no direction, and perhaps more staff positions were in jeopardy.

Management did not seem interested in the safety concerns that they raised with them. They continued on understaffed, overworked, stressed, and just trying to do the best job they could. All of this is in the middle of the most unstable snow pack in decades. Each day they just wanted to make sure everyone got home safe, staff and guests alike.

On January 18th the young patroller that originally pulled Taylor Scurfield out of the closure was let go. He had been asked to write a letter of apology to the Scurfield’s and refused to do so as he was just doing his job trying to keep them safe. Everything he did was following the policies of the ski hill. This was the last straw for the rest of the staff, and they decided the only way their voice could be heard was by having a one-day one-time protest by not going to work. Some had already been working while they were sick and injured to cover the staff shortages and so they called in sick. They gathered together in Canmore.

This sudden staff shortage left Sunshine with too few staff to operate. They cut some corners against their own safety guidelines, and the advice of supervisors, and opened anyway at a diminished capacity, Strawberry, Standish, and Wawa. They did not initially inform skiers and did not tell the truth to the public as to why lifts were closed. They eventually offered people $20 “gift certificates” for a later date. Not surprisingly people were angry and when it hit the news the rumors started flying.

The press got wind of the “protest” and two patrol staff stood up and became spokesmen for the rest of the staff, at the jeopardy of their jobs. They felt it was a risk that needed to be taken to let the public know the safety concerns they had since the loss of all their experienced leaders.

Sunshine management denied any knowledge of bad morale, safety concerns, or that they knew staff were planning to walk out. But management had started alternate measures for gondola evac staffing the day before. They said they hoped all the staff was ok and hoped they would be back at work the next day. That night they interrogated a supervisor on who was in a picture taken at the gathering with the press. They were preparing for the staff coming back the next day and looking for whom they could blame.

The patrol staff arrived at work on January 20th to Management interrogating them one by one. The spokesmen from the day before were told they could leave then, or work the day and hear their jobs fate at the end of shift. They both chose to work their shift. Management was looking to go after who ever they could.

At the end of the day Craig McArthur, and Jock Richardson the two spokesmen were fired and escorted off of the hill and banned from the property. During the discussion they had with owners and management they asked why Charlie Hitchman had been let go. They were told it was because he showed “bad judgment” in removing Taylor Scurfield and friends from the closed area. The owner also threatened legal action against all the staff that protested.

Now the patrol is more short staffed and have lost another close to 30 years of experience. They are demoralized, devastated, and still in fear of losing the jobs they love. When you see them they look sad. They are trying their best to do their job under exceptionally difficult circumstances.

This is the story without any embellishment or untruths. Management has made up some other reasoning’s for the dismissals, but none of them hold any weight.
(Ben Chevalier was only fired because he is Chris Chevalier’s nephew. “Blood is thicker than water,” he was told.)

And now there seem to be rumours that the reason they were sacked was because they were trying to form a union - if true that could be interesting for Sunshine Village to get out of. Whichever way you look at it, it seems to be a massive PR failure on Sunshine's part - I don't think there's a ski forum around which this hasn't been reported on and they just don't seem to know how to handle the comments on their Facebook page.

If the story above is true (and I can well believe it) it sucks - not just for the treatment of dedicated staff but also for putting the public at risk and all because of some spoilt little brat!

I think the whole thing sucks.

It will be really interesting to hear what happens in the unfair dismissal case. Courts in Alberta are fairly right wing, so I hope that doesn't pose a problem.

It all smacks of arrogant little heirs to me.

Well if the owner's son continues to ignore closed area signs and skis there when there's a high avalanche risk rolling eyes it'll soon be a case of "heir today, gone tomorrow"! Toofy Grin

A friend of mine has just returned from Banff and there were also problems in buses collecting them from the hotels. Only lake Louise would do it the others picked up from a central point in the village a 30 minute walk away Shocked

I have been a frequent visitor from Scotland to Banff for the last five years for my skiing vacation. It is with great regret that I now understand that hotel-to-hill coach transfers only exist for Lake Louise. This is a major factor in deciding where to spend my winter vacation and if hotel-to-hill transfers are not included for Sunshine Village and Norquay then we may have had our last vacation in Banff area.

It's a real mess. We're going out in March, and were able to change our hotel to a more central one to ensure we were close to the Sunshine pick up point. But if this problem with closures etc at Sunshine persist, I guess it'll be the last time we make the trip to Banff.

I've been following the soap opera on TGR. Got to say on top of the ski bus thing this is making Sunshine Village look like the laughing stock of the ski world. I'm sure other ski areas have their local politics and dramas (I'm sure I've heard of French linked areas where neighbouring towns don't speak to each other) but in the age of social media they aren't doing themselves any favours.

Just alittle insider information about the story!
-The actual date was Dec. 17th not the 19th
-The patroller who caught Taylor Scurfield in the closed area was actually forced to write the letter or lose his job, in keeping that he wanted to keep his job he wrote the letter.
-One of the people that was with Taylor was the son of the founder of WestJet and the rest were all kids of wealthy well-to-do parents
-The patroller who caught Taylor was "laid off" because of the reasons of "skier visits down, revenue down" while the company had job posting for ski patrollers out since Jan 10th.
-On Jan 21st. Sunshine brought in 6 firefighters to show the media that staffing levels were fine and were suppose to be there from the 21st to the 23rd. Those 6 did not return because patrol found out how much they were getting paid when patrol were told they were "volunteering" and getting meals and accom. paid for for.

So alittle more to chew on with this whole mess!

I'm off to Banff in early Feb so would appreciate any news from folk there or who've just come back, i.e. is it worth the trek to the Sunshine bus or is it so bad there's more ski area open in Norquay?

I can cope with a trek to the bus, but if Sunshine Village is like a ghost town with only three chairs operating there's not much point. Crying or Very sad

The Buses are what puts me off the area as we fancied the skiing but 3 hills all a long bus ride (10mins is long to me) just keeps us going back to Whistler.

If they stop the free buses they will loose most of their long distance customers who do not have a hire car. Crazy idea.

Put Sunshine owners suicide pact on top; to show petulant son how "big" you are and their is going to be a load of unhappy punters already signed up that will not be going back. Its a mad world especially in a recession where every normal person is chasing every last booking. Puzzled

I was there last week, I enquired with Crystal and Igham reps about the bus situation and Sunshine Village - They took a neutral stance but did say that they hoped that Sunshine would follow suit, after Norquay paid for the busses to return along Banff Ave to their ski hill, So I guess they added my complaint to the list of many others:

Why do we pay so much for a 3 area lift pass which includes transport to and from the 3 ski hills only to be shuttled around on the local town bus, All the towns folk trying to get to work and to school with loads of irritable skiers squashed in to every space on their local bus service when visiting Sunshine and (uptil Feb 2nd) Norquay.

The business with the Sunshine ski patrols is a travesty, and after speaking with many of them I fully support them.

The sarga with busses has been going on for a while, and I guess only the hotel owners, the bus company and the ski hills know the full story, it seems to be 6 of one and half a dozen of the other. The bus companies want a bit more money to run a financialy viable service - The Hotels dont wont to pay money and only Lake Louise has always been the one to pay the bus company to bring its skiers to the hill.

When Norquay finally caved in and paid the bus company to do the pick ups along Banff Avenue on Feb 1st/2nd I wasnt qiet sure if it was to do with them having an empty hill ( it was deserted on a bluebird day earlier in the week!) or was it to do with its 85 cent lift ticket day on its 85th Anniversary?


I only went to Sunshine for one day this time, and have been skiing in Banff for a number of years, In all that time I have enjoyed Sunshine, but this time I wasnt impressed at all, overal the service was poor compared to how it used to be. I voted with my feet just like the rest and headed for the other 2 ski hills.
Its the 1st time I have ever said 'lets try America next year' Shock

Avalanche in the closed Wild West area, triggered by two boarders who had ducked the ropes.....

This area is above the easy ski out which runs back down to the bottom of the gondola. Surely this would normally be kept avalanche free because of the risk to the ski out? Have the firings of the four senior members of the ski patrol affected safety at Sunshine?

Although it is above the ski out I don't think the ski out crosses anyof the major paths - I remember being there earlier this year and watching the patrollers do some control work at the top of Wild West. When we skied out I tried to look for the debris and failed. I think there is a bit of press license here. The patrol (hopefully) triggered all the major paths but weren't planning on letting anyone in (hence being closed) so small rolls etc were left which. But someone poached in there and triggered the size 1.5.

We have been to Sunshine/LL three times and were considering going back next year, however we are now looking elsewhere due to the bus situation! The owners need to be careful as they may bite off more than they can chew if they continue to treat their customers badly. There are plenty of other great resorts out there!!

My guess is that if they can prove their more serious allegations (eg safety, alcohol etc) for just cause against Chris Ch then Sunshine will win; especially if they have documentary evidence that they gave him warnings. This is Alberta afterall, not the cosy fluffy EU. Chris C appears to be the only one with extended notice periods (over and above ALberta minimum) and the others will not get much compensation even if their claims are met.

If Rowan did indeed issue identification to his girlfriend I suspect too that that would be just cause (not legally qualified in any way, but just cause can be quite slim here in Alberta, or that is my feeling; we have had a few people disappear quite suddenly at work)

gryphea, If I had to guess I'd say a beer in the patrol room is par for the course for most ski resorts the world over & I doubt the French pisteurs are adverse to a nip of something stronger. Its hard to make an armchair quarterback judgement - if read in the worst light it makes it sound like these guys were a bunch of crooked fraudsters. If this were the case did this gammut of crimes only suddenly come to light at one of the busiest times of the season?

If read in the context of what goes on in most mountain towns it could be rather pathetic. The examples of the fraud and ssafety breaches will be interesting - not fastening chinstrap on hemlet while riding a snowmobile or leaving explosives out in sunlight in public area?

Not disagreeing, but Alberta courts aren't known for their pro-employee standpoint. Alcohol and ski patrol might mix in Europe but this is north america where booze is less universal

Sunshine had a worker death a few years ago and if they are trying to clean up their act then maybe some of the safety stuff may ring a little true. Of course the timing is supicious but that won't negate just cause.

We had a lesson with a L4 L1 trainer based at Sunshine and he told us the situation was quite complicated and went back a long time.

I'm really interested to know the outcome. This is all just mud slinging both ways and somewhere in there is the truth. Of course the Alberta courts may not care about the truth; they care about employers being able to do what they want.

It is back to the old story that it ain't what actually happened, but what you can make it look like in court...

If the facts are as reported in that document it does sound like there was an interesting culture on the hill,and that the way Scurfield junior's pass was yanked was contrary to policy.

The real winners in this will be the Lawyers.
