Poster: A snowHead

Hi folks,
just back from Banff and had a grand time. Hadn't been skiing for a while and had always used my old skis.
Anyway this time I hired some at Sunshine and was given some "All Mountain Skis"
I've never heard of these before as most of my time in the snow and ice is spent climbing and skiing is something I do now and again.
Are they supposed to be the best all round thing to use? I'm an intermediate skier and I found them ok for most things except powder.
Anyone fancy humouring me and giving me the low down on them?
Cheers, Den

Jack of all trades - master of none.
I wouldn't worry intermediate skiers can find powder quite challenging.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Depends on the skis, some of all the mountain ski's are good in powder some seem to be called all mountain skis because they are not great at anything. I am on my second pair of all mountain ski's and both have been good in the powder, fisrtly Rossi B2's and now Vokl AC40's, the Vokl's are superb and can pretty much do any terrain and are very good on all terrain.

True, of course, but some all mountain skis are pretty good at a lot. If you are touring, it almost automatically follows that you need something all-mountain as well as light - since one run from the top can cover ice, breakable crust, hard pack and powder. But even with straight Alpine skiing you can come across a wide variety. In Wengen last week on the last day I came across some delightful powder - but the was other stuff that had to be coped with too. My skis are Scott Missions - and ideal 'all-mountain' ski for me (and very good in powder).

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

nixmap, that is tosh.
My best pair of skis - K2 Rictors - all mountain with rocker...
They are master of all mountain skis. Bet I can use them better on piste than half the folk who post on here wanting GS/SL race skis etc etc...

flangesax, bet those who know how to use GS/SL skis can do better on hard pistes, though.

Just been looking at all mountain skis but can someone explain the difference between those and those marketed as big mountain skis? Some companies catchy name for the same thing or something different?

Big mountain is charging hard and straight down a big face, with few turns. Could be powder, could be crud/crust. Skis will be long straight and stiff (and scary) to smash through whatever's in the way - ie Dynastar XXL.
All mountain (should, but doesn't always as it's a popular marketing ploy) = 50% piste 50% offpiste, no bias either way.
