Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Fernie Lift Passes

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi, we will be in Fernie for five days at the end of February. Does anyone have any info on were to obtain discounted lift passes for the area, especially on line? When I was last in N America many of the resorts had discount vouchers available from all kinds of outlets, but they are impossible to collect from the UK.
Cheers

Fernie doesn't really do lift pass deals or even significant multi-day discounts. Try ringing a few Calgary ski shops such as Fresh to see if they sell discounted tickets but chances of picking up something locally are zero I'd think.

Fleke,

We were there last year and even multi-day discount passes don't exist.

I think your best chance is to buy your hotels through RCR vacations- they are usually competitive on hotels and I beleive offer up to 25% on hill tickets

If you're travelling via a UK tour operator, buy your passes from them. Saved a fortune last year. We were there for 2 weeks and saved over £500 between the 2 of us, booking passes through Crystal.

Hi Fleke,

You have a couple of options in Fernie when visiting from the UK. Firstly, as mentioned by gryphea is to buy through RCR or www.tourismfernie.com and take advantage of a ski & stay package, giving you access to discounted lift passes. Secondly, as mentioned by Spyderman, take a look at some of the tour op deals - Inghams, Crystal, Ultimate etc and you'll most likely find some deals. However, your visit coincides with one of the busiest times of the season in most resorts so I would recommend booking accommodation as soon as possible.

On another note - the season here is shaping up very well and the 25 cm this morning is pushing our 2010-11 total very rapidly towards 6m with a 2.3m base. Things are looking good!

If you have any questions, you're welcome to send them through this contact form and I'll be happy to answer them - http://www.tourismfernie.com/contact-us

Cheers,

Will

tourismfernie, Welcome to snowHeads snowHead

I've spent 4 weeks skiing in Fernie and love it, but lift pass prices really are excessive, not necessarily the single one day pass, but the fact that there are no multi-day discounts available direct from the ticket office. Every resort in Europe provides a discount, so the more days you buy a pass for the cheaper per day it becomes.

It really puts people off from coming to Fernie as if you're having to add single day ticket prices together it becomes prohibitively expensive.

tourismfernie, are you RCR employed? Just wondering since the mild misrepresentation sounds similar Wink

Spyderman, I have no idea why they won't do week passes, it's bizaare. I'll try and find out if there's a reason...

And the reason is....(drum roll) to screw every last cent out of the hapless customer Sad ! Is there any other resort in the world that treats customers with such utter contempt? It's beyond disgraceful.

I was at Fernie last winter. We had decent snow (at the top at least) but no way is that lift system worth paying top dollar for.

Following on from the earlier stuff on resort marketing descriptions, I see that Fernie tourism has responded to a posting about Fernie lift tickets (under 'Resort Reviews') with the following:

"On another note - the season here is shaping up very well and the 25 cm this morning is pushing our 2010-11 total very rapidly towards 6m with a 2.3m base. Things are looking good!"
AAAGH Mad!! Another example of resort speak! Who gives a to$$ about the creative use of cumulative snow totals Puzzled It's honesty about current conditions that we want!!

Hi Guys - a few answers to the previous questions:

Tourism Fernie is Fernie's Destination Marketing Organization. We are a small staff of 2 people and do not work for RCR. We represent Fernie as a whole - winter and summer and skiing is obviously a huge part of what Fernie has to offer. So, although we promote the activities here (including skiing), when it comes to lift prices, that's a question for the resort.

As for current conditions, they're great. As mentioned in my last post, 25cm fresh yesterday. Freezing levels were to surface and we saw a solid accumulation of snow from the last storm. I skied over the weekend and was blown away by the conditions. Mountainaddict - apologies if you interpreted my last post as resort speak, it was by no means supposed to sound creative. I was fresh off the hill and called it like I saw it. It was a bomber weekend up there.

Take a look at the cams - maybe they're better at explaining than me... http://www.tourismfernie.com/gallery/webcams

I think it's a question you should be asking the 'Resort'. You're promoting Fernie and you have some unhappy previous and future customers. Promotion would be a lot easier if the lift pass pricing issue was addressed.

Spyderman - That's very true and although we're not in a position to make recommendations on our members' pricing structures, we can certainly pass on concerns such as these because they need to be heard.

Thanks for the feedback and I'll be sure to pass it on to FAR.

Happy skiing,

Will

For those who would like an independent view of the conditions in Fernie, check our my mate's daily blog at www.billhandley.com.

Basically he lives in Fernie in the winter, skis there everyday, has no affiliation with any business (he's retired), and enjoys telling his mates in the UK how much fun he's having...

Hi mountainaddict,

He was in banking! But if you buy a season pass, and ski 120+ days a season, I'm told it brings the cost down to less than $10 a day, which sounds far more manageable!

Just spotted (in Inghams brochure) that, not only is a Fernie lift ticket £50+ a day but they also charge a daily $6 return for the ski bus. Are they actively trying to discourage visitors Puzzled

tourismfernie, just my $0.02 worth...........

I've had four weeks there also (out of a total of twenty odd in Ca), and, conditions permitting, I'm happy to be there than anywhere else, even though it's an 8000+ mile round trip.

But, speaking personally, FAR/RCR's attitude to lift ticket pricing means I'll generally choose other Canadian hills first. So that anyone remotely aware of what the average "Brit" slider spends locally when on vacation, doesn't need telling how it impacts the whole of Fernie.

So, as someone who can access the "right" people, and FWIW, please feel free to also pass this on.

tourismfernie, We visited there on a Canadian roadtrip couple of years ago. From what we saw of FAR I wouldnt ski there again if it was free.

Compared to other resorts they treat their guests with contempt. The terrain is good but theres places as good and better.

Hey have you ever considered some of the other resorts in BC (Snow this year is great all round)

I am ski bumming in Rossland (Where Red Mountain Resort is) it is a gem of a place not easy to get to granted (but that's perhaps why it is great), if not Revelstoke has tons of snow, I have heard good things about it from friends who have just come back from there.

I know Red Mountain does discount on multi days and always do deals on Mountain chalet and hill passes, they have a website that's quite informative let me know if you need details (I realise you may be going to Fernie for a reason).
