Ski Domes, thought they were only in Japan(seen that on Discovery channell:)). Sounds like a great idea. Especially to teach. They have moguls?]
Do you think it would work if I opened one here in the US, NY. Would be a great teaching aparatus!

huckingfellers, Think twice. It is sooo expensive to operate them.
One of the largest domes closed in Japan, and the first skidome in the world in Australia closes soon.
Financial reasons.
So, think about your operational cost and how much you would charge for a ticket.

And they tend to be quite small. And no moguls.

huckingfellers, they seem to work well in flatter bits of mainland Europe. Holland, Germany both have a few which have been around for a while and are apparently doing well enough to service loans and turn a worthwhile profit.
There are three in the UK. Anyone have any idea how they're doing here?

Tamworth is always rammed to generally dangerous levels. Whether they're making money - I suppose they must be as they've been going for a few years.

Castleford always seems to be empty...but xscape are currently building their third in Britain so it can't be an abject failure.

Maybe the secret is getting monsieur PY Gerbeau to run the show! He was on BBC Breakfast TV this morning telling us how great the British way is of doing things is compared to Europe's.
Possibly it's the concept of creating a whole 'Extreme Sports' complex which succeeds more than just a Snowdome?!?

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

How big is it going to be? Our slopes seem to all be around 200 yards, but I seem to remember the Japanese one that closed was huge (1 km?). It was open 24 hours per day. I gather they have 6 other ones now - I bet they are smaller.

snowball, there were two 450m main slopes. SSAWS in Minami-Funabashi just south of Tokyo. Went there twice in the early 90's.
I went to the 640m one in Bottrop, Germany recently.

According to Elizabeth Parlett, spokeswoman for the Mills Corporation, construction on Xanadu in New Jersey should begin by the end of March with a projected opening date of Spring 2007.
The $1.3 billion Xanadu plan includes a 140-foot high snow dome that covers an area of more than 250,000 square feet. |
Not one of the biggest.
