Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

SR Bardonecchia

Hi

I am doing a season in Bardonecchia so thought I would report how it has been so far.

Good snowfall at the start of the season and low temperatures has given us a good base although the recent warm weather has eroded this slightly and the runs are getting a bit scratchy but colder evenings this week allowing snowmaking again with forecast snow fall should mean the slopes should be good again next week.

Bardonecchia has two ski areas, the main area includes Campo Smith, Les arnauds and Melezet which has about 60% of the quoted pistes. there is a really good mix of blues and reds, with a couple of blacks the runs are fairly long with a mix of tree lined and above the tree line. Each piste is quite different which makes for varied skiing there are long straightish runs for the speedsters but some interesting runs with lots of contours for more fun skiing. Whilst there is not much off piste when we have good snow there is fun to be had through the tress and under the lifts.

In the week you almost get the pistes to yourself. the weekends are horribly busy with the hoards heading up from Torino. there are good choice of mountain cafes with two serving bacon butties or a full English breakfast, prices are fairly reasonable with a decent local plate of food coming in between 5-9 euro's a bottle of beer costs 2.50 and a half litre 4-6.

The other area is the Jefferau mountain bit of a locals mountain and very quiet but with some great skiing nearly all of which is above the tree line, the views from here are tremendous you can see right across the milky way and the the peaks of the three valleys. the runs are here are nice and long and with the lack of people the piste conditions are still holding up very well, in low season you quite often find the pistes are not bashed evry day so after new snow fall you quite often get lots of powder to play in. the runs here are very contoured and one of the blue runs is great fun with lots of big rollers. the whole mountain can be skied after big snow and it makes an off piste wonderland for those who are not the most experienced.

the town itself is very nice with a real Italian feel, with plenty of bars and restaurants, but a with a relaxed feel and not a big party destination although there is three nightclubs for those who want to party late. As with most of Italy the apres scene is very quiet.

Thinking of trying Bardonecchia next February, and looking to stay in Hotel La Quiete, any comments, also is it possible to ski from Campo Smith side to Jefferau, and if not is there any local transport provided. Puzzled
Thanks in advance.

Don't know much about the Quiete but it is only about 5 minute walk to Campo smith. To get to Jefferau there is a regualr ski bus that goes every 20 mintes and also a better way which is called the jefferau express, this is a minibus that goes on a continuos loop between the bottom of campo smith lift and the gondola at jefferau

Richiavo, I've been to Bardonecchia twice and enjoyed it, but Jafferau was my favourite side Very Happy Is there still that scary single chair up from the base?
