I still use the same ski socks that I got when I was five for my first ever ski trip. They are green with polar bears on them, and over the years have stretched with my feet. I have been known to wear them for two weeks in a row, after all, everyone knows beer is more important than washing powder.

First: get socks, not tubes
I use some nice decathlone ones, no idea what modeal but they're nice and seem to have padding and ribbing in the right areas. Not too thick as you lose sensitivity in the boot with thicker socks
For me, I take 3 pairs on a 6 day trip - 2 days per pair. Mrs NBT takes 6 pairs, one day each.

Couple of pairs of SnR ski socks and couple of pairs of Smartwool. I usually wear a pair of silk inner socks too.

I use Falke and Smartwool - although the Smartwool socks are less smelly they are not lasting as well as the Falke ones. The Smartwool ones are getting thin around the heel area. Both makes are very comfortable to wear and I never have a problem with blisters - but then I do have some heat moulded Outlast footbeds in my boots so I think this comes in to the equation.

If you are hiring boots, then it makes little difference what socks you wear as long as your feet are warm.
If you are having your own boots fitted, heat moulded etc then you will want to have appropriate socks. The sort to look for are often called "technical" or even "race". They have padding on the front where the shin is and thicker heels and toes. I guess the idea is that they take up the spaces in the boots in the right places. They do make a difference.
Cheap tubes might well be Ok for hired boots. I don't see why not.

My local Aldi still has some socks left after the ski wear offer, do the job and even cheaper than decathlon!

As everyone knows I use Lidls when they do the properly shaped and technical looking ones - some of mine are about 5 years old with 1-2 weeks per year use. They seem excellent value for a newcomer to skiing, but you might struggle to get them this time of year. If you sign up for Lidls emails you will find when they are for sale next year.

MisterG, firstly I would say that it is fairly common to suffer cold feet in the big fridge so might not be the fault of your current socks.
Re. the big calves, I have tried lots of types and find Smartwool the best for this, and for warmth too. Lots of others don't come up high enough and so cut into the calf.

Lidl socks are well designed and you can buy lots at once. I also have great silk socks by Patra which are very warm but thin. But your boots should be keeping you warmer - I'm surprised you got cold feet. They definitely weren't too tight or small

I use regular black socks, thin as I can get.
I don't generally go cheap on ski gear but socks seem like one area you can save big on with no issues.
Having said that I do have custom footbeds & tweaked liners so main reason I wear socks is to reduce transfer of bacteria etc to my liners.

Bought some M&S ski socks (with silver technology no less ...) that I have used this weekend and they seemed warm, comfy etc.

I've got Falke ones. Take one pair on a trip, take them off and when you have a bath (or shower) after skiing, put the socks in with you. Wring them out and hang in bathroom, and the air is so dry in the mountains that they will be all ready to wear the following day.

I tend to wear flight socks to stop my legs/feet from swelling too much. But they don't keep my feet very warm. I do have ski socks too (from Decathlon) which are better for warmth but rubbish for swelling.

halfhand, Arf arf! But there is only me and Mrs Trenmold in the apartment (or hotel room) and neither of us minds. Same approach works for underwear, vests, tee shirts etc etc.

I got a couple pairs of Falke SK4's from SocksFox a few weeks ago. £17.50 each incl. postage - that's the cheapest I could find them. Seems a lot of money for a pair of socks, but worth it if splashing out on properly fitted boots and molded footbeds. I'd agree with Chris - if you're only hiring boots the the socks probably won't make much difference.

I use whatever I had on my feet when they fitted my boots. Not much good to you I know.
I think it will depend on the fit of the boots in the first place. Take what you have, if you have problems, buy some more in resort.

My custom-fit intra-boot performance interfaces (socks is just too trivial a word), are specially tuned by pygmy Eskimos for differing snow conditions. Orientated right and left of course, but in my case this depends on which side of the organic merino sheep the wool was sheared from. They can never be washed, instead returned to the factory technicians in Bicester for an optimisation service. £93 a pair is pricey but I wouldn't expect any of you to understand the performance advantage and feel this gives me but there's no going back, not just any old sock will do.
Although... the other week, when "someone" forgot to pack the socks, I skied in the next best thing I had available which can be best described as a woollen suit sock with a bit of elastane (you know, like wot that Jones bloke on dragons' Den wears). Cheap, nice and thin and just as good as the merino jobbies I left at home. If the boot fits properly "almost" anything will do.

i been using decathalon's wed'ze ski socks for the past two trips away and any trips to the sheffield ski village and castleford xscape. seem to work fine for me . although had one pair of tube socks last year, NEVER AGAIN! they rubbed and made my feet hurt, waste of money if you ask me!!
