Hi All,
We are planning a short 4nt break to pila beginning march, i understand that Turin in the closest airport but flights are quite a bit more pricey then going into bergamo, but then if we can get around hiring a car to travel from Turin to Pila we will be better off as we would have to hire a car from Bergamo.... Just wondering if anyone has used public transport; bus/train/whatever to get to pila from turin?

Have you considered Geneva? It's about the same distance as Turin (through the mt Blanc tunnel) but has loads more flight options from the UK. Bergamo to Pila is a bit of a trek. There's public transport to Aosta, where you can take the gondola to Pila.

You can take the train from Turin to Aosta and then the gondola up to Pila, train is about 7 euro's. If you arrive on a Sunday you might able to get on tour ops. You might better getting a car though as you can buy a VDA pass and ski in other resorts as well as Pila. From Bergamo you would have take a bus to Milan and then train from there where you would have to change at Turin or another station.

ah, didn't think of geneva........ good point, lots more flights into geneva, will give it a look, thanks! we are only going for 4 days so was hoping to pick up a cheap flight to turin so we can definately get skiing the day we arrive but since easyjet pulled thier flights ryanair seem to be a bit pricey!

Geneva has more flights, but the cost of getting to the Aosta Valley will be more. I'm pretty sure you will need to hire a car for Pila, and of course you will incur fairly hefty tunnel fee's unless you loop around the Saint Bernard. I'd go Turin and take the train, or hire a car for an Aosta road trip. That said I'm pretty sure there is a coach service from Milan.

It all depends on arrival/departure days/times, whether you're prepared to forego convenience for budget etc. Turin is easliy the most convenient.
david@mediacopy, is right about costs through the tunnel if you drive, but you can get a direct bus from Geneva to Aosta depending on times. Otherwise you can get a bus to Chamonix and change.
Have you thought about private transfer from Geneva?
We (4 adults) did a 4 night stay in Courmayeur last season with Interski (they also do Pila) who charged £60pp return for a minibus transfer.

When we go we fly into Geneva as we can't get flights to Turin easily from up north and hire a car. Its not cheap but with 3 sharing its not too bad and much better than going down south to catch a plane

Are you set on staying in Pila? Aosta is a very viable option as it's connected directly to Pila by gondola. It's a really nice old town - cobbled streets, Roman ruins etc and has a fair selection of places to eat and drink. Prices are reasonable too.
