Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

adapting to new skis

getting new skis for Christmas (assuming Santa got the note!) - Salomon Lords 177 with Marker Baron bindings. I've been skiing Head Monster 72's in 163 for the last 4 years but feel I've outgrown them somewhat and keen to do more off-piste.
We are off to Puy St Vincent in January and I'm wondering how it will be adjusting to the wider and longer skis (I'm 5ft 11 and 11 stone). So, I'm wondering if anyone has any advice/tips on adjusting to new skis? I'm expecting it to feel quite strange and to take a bit of getting used to but I'd appreciate any helpful guidance.

Find a nice motorway red run & work through your core skiing skills to find out how they feel / work on your new skis.
Short radius turns, long radius, snow-ploughing including turns, side-slipping
Then have a play with elements of your technique to see what works best
You may need to adjust the width of your stance slightly, and how actively you pressure the front of the ski at the start of a turn

Alan McGregor, thanks, I'll give that a go. It's generally pretty quiet at Puy so should be able to find some suitable reds to play on whilst the rest of the family are off on lessons.

Point them down the hill, let gravity do the rest, turn and stop as and when, simple.

philipb, I had the same situation to you, I've just got some 178 Scott Missions, with the intention to ski more off piste, was used to 165's a lot narrower than the missions.

Used the Missions at Hemel a few weeks ago (I was a tad apprehensive early on, not knowing how I'd adjust), and to be honest there is not a great deal to worry about. It didnt take long 5 runs maybe? Before I felt comfortable on the skis, but that could just have been "rustiness" from not having skied for 9 months.

I wouldn't worry you'll adjust fine Smile

I was skiing on 165's, then last year I got some Atomic 175's. I found them hard going at first, till I realised they had to be skied aggresively. After that it just all came together(on about day 3) & now I love them. BTW, I'm 5' 10" & 11 stone.

philipb, be more patient at the start of your turns, don't try to get inside the arc too quickly, keep your weight forwards and be mindful not to fall onto the inside ski.
