Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Which instructional ski mountaineering book is worth looking at?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Just bought my first set of touring skis, and I do have some basic knowledge of skiing, and a lot on winter mountaineering, however, I am keen to get a pretty comprehensive book about the subject. The two that stood out whilst goggling were:

A Complete Guide to Ski Touring and Ski Mountaineering: Including useful information for off piste skiers and snowboarders

Author: Henry Branigan
Publisher: AuthorHouse
ISBN-13: 9781425970239
ISBN: 1425970230

and

Backcountry Skiing: Skills for Ski Touring and Ski Mountaineering (Mountaineers Outdoor Expert)

Author: Martin Volken, Scott Schell, Margaret Wheeler
Publisher: Mountaineers Books
ISBN-13: 9781594850387
ISBN: 1594850380

Any thoughts on these or any other book?

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person
The latter is very good (as are most things published by Mountaineers Books). If you don't have it I'd also suggest getting hold of Bruce Tremper's Staying Alive in Avalanche Terrain (2nd ed).

Edit: Alive! Not Alice...

The Cicerone guide books are excellent

Alpine Ski Mountaineering Vol 1 - Western Alps & Alpine Ski Mountaineering Volume 2 - Central & Eastern Alps - Europe

Bill O'Connor knows his stuff
His guide books have alot of useful general info before you get into the routes section.

Cicerone Press

Steve Achelis's Mountain Responder is a useful book on avalanches

His website BeaconReviews.com is very useful too.

If you're planning to visit Switerland, watch out for their ski-touring maps "Carte de Randonnees a Ski". Have loads and loads of known ski routes marked as well as avalanche zones and lifts.
Many of them you won't find in any other guide books.

Not seen the first, but the second one you mention is very good.

If you want a more skiing focussed book I'd also recommend The All Mountatain Skier by Elling (http://www.amazon.co.uk/All-Mountain-Skier-Way-Expert-Skiing/dp/007140841X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1293186406&sr=8-1&tag=amz07b-21)

Yep, just saw this recommended here: http://www.planetfear.com/articles/OffPiste_Technique_1106.html (well worth a read)

Started reading it yesterday, it's much more readable than most other avalanche books I'd seen.

I've not read most of the books mentioned in the thread,
but Jimmy Oden's 'Free Skiing' is almost a definitive manual of mountain-craft
(and it has awesome pictures !)

I've bitten the bullet, and despite no word on the first book, I've decided to order it, and give it a shot. Christmas vouchers to spend on stuff you want are good aren't they! Very Happy
