Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

What's the best chalet company you've stayed with?

Hi
We've never done a 'chalet' before but have often thought about giving it go.... just read the other thread about Alpine Elements which has made us a bit wary...
So, i guess i'm asking what's the best chalet/company you've stayed with and where was it? we usually ski in Italy but are looking at france in march 2011. Both intermediate skiers and not bothered about where we go that much. Just interested to hear peoples good chalet experiences!

For France and for value for money ; Silverski and Ski Olympic .

We ( family 2 adults , kids 9 and 15 ) would not do anything but a chalet holiday .

+ves : Great for ski guiding , meeting other skiers of similar standards to ski with , keeps a lid on costs . Importantly if with children means other kids to play and ski with, share child care etc and we can socialise with other adults ( even those without our encumbances ) , more so than we have done in a hotel.
Food usually good and sometimes great. Free wine a bonus. Met some great people , guests and staff. Now a pure ageist remark - after quite a few hotel trips with the big operators and crap useless staff our chalet holidays have been a revelation in that many of the staff are years ( OK decades ) older and it shows .

-ves : reverse the above , especially obnoxious people you have to eat with . One couple we met however said on 10 holidays with Silverski they had never had a bad chalet - nor have we.

Worth trying in my view and great to see here recommendations outside France. What about Austria ?

Cheers all

John

Think it's my thread you're referring to, in fairness to them they are still the best chalet operator we've stayed with over two holidays, another planned in Jan and potentially a big group trip in Dec. Currently struggling to find an alternative TO that will do flights, accom and transfers in a catered chalet that I'd rather book with, which has to be a good sign.

They are also very reasonably priced, for the money I doubt there is a better deal out there for France. Their gold collection is reputed to be even better, so if you're unsure, perhaps that is worth the premium as an intro to chalets?

The best?

Without question Les Marmottes in Serre Che. Outstanding food, great wine, comfy but not fussy, 6/7 minutes walk to the lifts. Fantastic hosts/owners. Stayed there 3 times and couldn't fault the place/experience.

However, not really a "chalet company" I suppose. The skiing in SC would certainly suit you IMHO.

Also had a very positive experience of Crystal Ski in one of their catered chalets in La Tania a few years ago - terrific value, especially given the amount of vino we managed to get through Laughing

cbowls30, VIP in Val D'Isere 3-4 years ago when economy/ times were better - now strictly DIY, budget flights, 2-3* accommodation etc, main criteria is # ski days per year now in top ski resorts getting as much off-piste in, and not when is the Savoy opening its new chalet......................I can see the attraction of posh chalets with a good group of pals, some of my best holidays were spent this way but not for next few years me-thinks!! Just as happy but maybe a bit more grounded................on the other hand, been with some pretty ropey chalet companies also, and wont be using them again rolling eyes

Another vote for Ski Olympic - been with them probably 20 times and holdays have always been good to excellent. Went with Silver Ski for the first time last season and they were very good. Everyone else in the chalet had been with them many times before and had nothing but praise for the company.

Friends went with VIP ski to Alpe d'Huez last year and said they were really good - they paid a lot less than the brochure price (£600 rather than £1000). Good quailty high end company they thought.

Been with Inghams a couple of times and will be going again in Jan to a different chalethotel-very good experience both times so far.

Scott Dunn-very good service, second to none but I wouldn't bother paying the money for them any other time unless I could get a really cheap deal as I did that time.

Heard good reports about VIP and YSE too.

Heard good stuff about Ski Olympic too.

Neilsons once but that was a hotel not a chalet-rep was very good.

I've had mostly good experiences with the chalet companies I've been with, but a lot of that is down to the other guests in the chalet. Companies I've been with and would happy to go with again include:-

Mark Warner (the best chalet food I've had)
Skiworld
Inghams
VIP
Ski Olympic

The worst chalet I've been to was with Airtours.

le Chardon Val d'isere. Very nice! picked up 6 of us from the airport then served champagne to us as we waited while they loaded the luggage then passed around a small basket containing canapes and cake and a 2nd bottle of champagne. Great food great wines and wonderful service.
Chauffeur service to and from the lift.............. only went once we got a great last min deal ! I keep looking

For me it was Aggroski about ten years ago. After the flight we got to the transfer bus when the rep started singing, 'come on then if you think you're hard enough'. About fifteen punters then jumped the Romford boy and took control of the bus. After sixteen hours travelling from Chambery to Les Arcs we finally arrived at Chalet Rond Point des Pukes to be greeted by departing punters fighting with the resort rep over the quality of food and wine. Our week was marvellous-pasta and sauce every night all washed down with gallons of Mitig. Afer all, we wouldn't want the food spoiling the main reason why we were there. Then every night the chalet host would come back with a different woman to conduct a stress test of his bed, augmented by a sound proofing test of the stud walls. We confirmed to him each morning that his bed was robust enough though the walls could do with improving. Then he'd slam down a bit of weetabix, a few cups and then head to the fridge for another Mitzig..... all at 8am in the morning. He was a nice bloke, albeit with an alcohol and possibly a drug problem. He could have flushed the close combat socks down the loo, however........

A great trip.

cbowls30, another vote for Silver Ski plus Skiworld. Independent, More Alps in La Rossier, Sixt Mountain Chalet one of the best we have stayed at in terms of quality and little touches such as meeting us off the cable car in Samoens with our walking boots as Sean knew we wanted to tour the town, getting in a bottle of specific wine for us and charging cost, www.sixtalpinechalet.com

I've stayed with Silver Ski and Ski Amis recently with both being great value and offering good choice in France. I preferred the service and overall feel of Ski Amis but you do have to sort your own travel. I didn't mind cos I loved going by Eurostar to the Alps... definitely the way to go if funds allow!

Rude Chalets have to be right up there. I really enjoyed their chalet in Morzine, brilliant food, loads of free Red Bull, and XBox in every room Smile I guess it's a bit of a young place, but very well equipped and great staff.

Another vote for snowline/VIP. We have been with them for the pat 8 years(ish) now and have been v v impressed with the service, chalets, food, hosting, well everything. OH had a v bad accident a few years back and the staff in the repsort could not have been more helpful.
They are not the cheapest, but after years of student ski hols, I have rather got used to a bit of luxury Embarassed

I worked a season as a Chalet host. From my experience from mingling with other seasonaires, I would say Silver Ski gave the best value product. I know if i was to work again or to holiday in a chalet, i would go for them.
