It's really only up in 1850, but its endemic there - one marketing campaign can't make Courchevel "not" the place where incredibly gauche people spend obscenely.
I remember meeting one of their marketing (or something like that) managers a few years ago - was he Norwegian? doesn't matter - all tan, hair style and smugness, and wearing a really nasty but clearly expensive Courch' branded ski jacket... perhaps the most snearing and self important little 'big man' I've ever met - not at all in keeping with the spirit of ski/snowboard fraternity...
...such a shame because Courchevel does have some magnificent skiing and snowboarding...
I was chatting with a shop owner last winter who said one tour operator was basically hounded out of town, by the council, because his holidays were "too affordable" for the riff raff... yet they still have the guy living there with his Hummer, parked in the high street.
It seems they don't really mind "tacky", so long as its expensive and tacky.
(seen the hundreds of massive new chalets built above town?)
All that said, I'll still recomend the place to our skiers and snowboarders, because the mountain is superb... and so are the small businesses who make the apres-vibe there so much fun...
Perhaps the old council people were seduced by mamon for a few years, but I bet those wiley old locals will drag Courchevel 1850 back to what it used to be... a real old-school class act.

Isn't the Daily Mail fantastic. A man with a lot of money spends some of this money on a party. In a recession. Outrageous!
There's nothing that DM readers like more than being outraged. However, people spending money - instead of saving - is the way out of the economic predicament we find ourselves in (As long as they don't borrow to spend.)
So I say to all billionaires, spend your money. You can't take it with you.

We were chatting to a parisian paparazzi who was mooching about down in 1850 who was down there to cover 'an event' last week, nice guy who was sent down there when he'd rather be at home with his newborn son. Offered that he could photo Sideways_Jnr and pass him off as Vladimir Putin, he declined...
Is it me or does Millionaire Victor Pinchuk look suspiciously like ITV News wrangler Alastair Stewart?

Got to be philosophical about this one, whilst some may say its vulgar extravagance, the little guys that work for the suppliers, barmen etc etc will appreciate some of that £4m in their pockets rather than being in the bank of a billionaire
