Looks like the TO we were going to go with will be cancelling on us, so I'd thought I'd try here in the off chance anyone was driving to the French alps this weekend, Friday/Saturday, and had a couple of seats spare? Long shot... I'd drive myself but can't get chains/winter tyres for my Golf and my partner doesn't drive

pam w, unfortuantely costs start to add up when adding ski carriage etc when doing a DIY package for the particular period we were thinking of going for. Ski Weekends have handled it badly in my opinion, informing us that they 'definitely' had spaces on their 5 day trip to Chamonix this weekend. They have continued to tell Sideshow_Bob, that they still have spaces on the trip, but can't book us on because their booking system is down and they would call him back when it was up and running again, yet when I phoned up there were 'definitely no spaces'. Booking system being down seems a bit of a sob story really but apparently they can confirm this morning, so fingers crossed there. Few cheap deals for the week after Xmas anyhow, so might just have to wait another week until then to hit the slopes.

Driving down to Chamonix this weekend, but as we're going in a mini not much space for anyone else. Not too much space for us actually, can't believe I'm not taking the SAAB but my wife complains it rattles too much (seven years old and done quite a few miles). She thinks it suits me, reliable but has seen better days. Compares it to an old jacket with leather elbows.
At least I have snow chains that fit the mini.

Sideshow_Bob, Dont get disappointed. take a the drive down with lots of stops for coffee. Get some chains on route from snowchains.co.uk just off the M20 in kent or stop off in Annemasse, Cluses or Salanches for some. Worse case will be paying over the odds on the autoroute. The radio or the overhead signs will tell what the road conditions are like coming up. go for it.

BergenBergen, unfortunately due to limited clearance I can't get chains for the wheels/tyres I have on my car... Well, I can get the stupid ineffectual socks-style ones but they're not much good.

Sideshow_Bob, where are you driving to? Rather than miss out on your trip, you could always drive to the valley and then get the bus up the hill ...
And while it's probably terribly irresponsible of me to suggest it, if you're going to Chamonix, you could just take a punt that in December the main road from Geneva will be clear.

Hi,
I have been thinking about a trip that week. When would you be coming back? I have a petrol vectra that we could take, I have snow chains but not snow tires. It uses a fair bit of fuel, and it would only be me and you 2 so not that cheap. When would you want to come back?
Let me know what you think. It is only a "thinking about it" at the moment, but I expect I could easily be persuaded to commit.

hughbedo, thanks for the offer, but after checking the calendar and some websites we're probably going to scrap the idea of going this weekend as it all got a bit too hectic/cramped for time and look for something probably with a TO departing on the 27th instead.
