Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Megeve supermarket

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi there,

We're driving from London to Megeve and want to stop off at a big supermarket to stock up on supplies for the week before we arrive at our rented apartment. Any suggestions on the best place to stop?

Thanks

Tom

here's a huge Carrefour in Sallanches, shortly after you leave the A40 motorway. That's likely to be better than Megeve itself - there's a big new Intermarché (or something similar) between Megeve and Praz sur Arly but I wasn't too impressed when I visited. Carrefour is in a shopping centre which also has loos and couple of eating opportunities (the football place, on the right as you look from the car park, is excellent value). The Carrefour is open at lunch time - not sure about the places in Megeve. On the other hand, the Megeve Intermarche is open on Sunday mornings and Carrefour isn't.

A bit further on in Sallanches there's a bakery open every day till late, with ample parking alongside.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

There was a (relatively) big Casino just outside of Megeve towards Combloux which wasn't extortionate and had a good range. Slightly further into Sallanches than carrefour on the left hand side set slightly back from the road in a small parade of shop (possibly the same place as the bakery) there is Ed's, which is a bit 'Lidlesque 'on the dry good and frozen front but is cheap by alpine standards, and has excellent fruit, veg and butchery counter - It seemed to be where all the Chamonix seasonnaires stocked up. I am not a huge fan of carrefour just because it is SO big and being 'the obvious' place in town to stop always seems to be heavingly busy - Crescendo cafe there is good though - the salad bar and salmon dishes particulalry.
