Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

I'm gonna buy Avalanche kit for this season.

What tranceiver do I want? I know people say "go and see which one you find easiest to use" but I don't have time for this.

The Mammut Pulse is recommended in an issue of Fall line, do people agree?

Don't really have a budget. What do people use and recommend?

Snowheads, go go go!

You don't have time to investigate essential equipment that may save you or your friends lives! Do you have enough time to practice searching with a transceiver?

The pulse is excellent by the way, can't really go wrong.

It has some features that might be a bit confusing for occasional users, but you can choose between "basic" and "pro" modes to keep things simple.

To be blunt, good. Avalanches and you/your mates' lives aren't a laughing matter.

But yes, I should have used the search function.

Fergus, have been using a Pulse for the last couple of winters (after a variety of other units over the years).

Very easy to use, comfortable to wear, and very quick to locate a probe-able area.

(Usual caveats apply re practise etc)

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Fergus, I have a Tracker 1 which seems good. Easy to use but perhaps a little flaky at the last 1/2 meter. However I'm confident with a little more practice that would be sorted. Easily passed the transceiver test on my recent Mountain Safety course.

Ortovox S1 if cost isn't a factor. It's foolproof.
Picture of your friend on the screen which you walk towards. Couldn't be easier.

I like the BCA Tracker a lot, have used it several times (thankfully only in excercises, not in anger) and it's been foolproof. Don't forget you'll need a shovel and a probe too.

This site is excellent for more info on transceivers: http://beaconreviews.com/transceivers/

And I found that one via Davidoff's site, http://pistehors.com/news/forums/, which is a great place for all types of avalanche info.

+1 for S1, couldn't be easier, but at some cost.

Yeah, I've ordered a Black Biamond 265 probe and transfer 3 shovel.

Been reading through the other SH threads posted above and beaconreviews. It's all pretty interesting. Been thinking about an avalanche safety course. Glenmore Lodge must do one?

Fergus, depending on where you've ordered them from it might be cost effective to return them. Most places do a deal if you order transceiver/shovel/probe.

Like this and 10% off if you are a registered user.

Maybe, I'd prefer to go to the Alps myself... E.g.

Fergus, the Glenmore lodge courses are excellent (I've even met Mountain Guides in the Alps who have been on courses there because of it's excellent reputation) and you'll be hard pressed to find anything better anywhere, there's also plenty of snow up there at the moment so no probs with that either.

Best of luck Toofy Grin

Fergus, And remember to practice in the free avi parks now found in many ski resorts.
