Just sat through a thunderstorm with full on pyrotechnic effects, all the while it was snowing ! That's a first for me - is this common ?

No. "Thundersnow" is actually pretty rare. Cool though.

We get at least one thunderstorm per winter here. It usually heralds the arrival of lotsa snow!

Seen it a few times, although most seem to be 1-2 claps and then plenty of snow.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Yeah, seen it once or twice as well. Snow falling at the rate of rain in a big thunderstorm is pretty amazing!

Another to say rare. And from one of my Avalanche books: very dangerous.

Had it here in Perthshire as well it lasted quite a while, have never experienced it before and found it very strange.

Had some this morning in Durham, just before a huge dump of snow, and it looks like the same is happening this evening. (The wind is getting up here too , and starting to blow the snow off the trees)

La Niña this year, I thought?

You know it makes sense.

It is, I thought I had read, relatively rare in this country because it is caused by cold snow laden air passing over warm water. (The North Sea warmer? Whatever next?) It is on further research more complicated
"Two mechanisms are important to the creation of thundersnow and they are elevated instability and strong dynamic lifting. Each of these mechanisms reinforces the other. The CAPE or instability in the troposphere is a function of the tropospheric temperature profile and the initial temperature and dewpoint of a parcel of air. Surface Based CAPE (SB CAPE) can be zero when at the same time lifting from another pressure level produces positive CAPE. The term for convection starting at a pressure level other than the surface is termed ELEVATED_CONVECTION. It helps to have the parcel initially start with a small dewpoint depression since CAPE is more likely to occur than if the dewpoint depression is large. Keep in mind that environmental dewpoint can increase with height or may not fall that much with height. Even if no elevated CAPE is present, CAPE may still be present when lifting occurs at a slant (known as slantwise convection) .......... etc"
