We're going 4th-5th Dec for the ski test weekend up at Chinaillon and again for New Year (and a couple more times). The webcams look lovely so I'm confident for next weekend given the cold temps. Hope it all lasts and improves for a good Xmas and New Year!

Most resorts in the area aren't open yet - though some opened some slopes just for the weekend.

Just back from a weekend skiing in Le Grand Bornand. English weather, Gatwick closures and Easyjet cancellations failed to stop us! Conditions were fantastic, as good if not better than they are during the season proper. Lovely "squeaky" snow on piste, several unpisted pistes and plenty of soft snow to play in everywhere else. The ski testing was free and all the major ski makers were there together with many smaller ones like Movement, Apo, Kastle and Elan and yet others I didn't know.
It was "child in a sweet shop" time as there must have been at least 100 different models to choose from and loads of them in all sizes.
However it was raining hard when we left this morning

We are off to Chinaillon on the 15. January 2011. Some of our party have been there about three times before, but the last time we visited was about five years ago. We never ventured to La Clusaz, but hope to get over there this time. We are staying in the same apartment we stayed in seven years ago (Pistes du Soleil) which is well located as is built into the cliff and from the top entrance leads onto the main shopping road and the bottom entrance leads to the ski lift. The resort is also that bit cheaper than many of the main resorts, often a bit quieter too.

Any news on whether recently forecast rain has arrived, and if so, whether it has done much damage?

simo1234, La Clusaz & LGB webcams look pretty grim compared to Saturday
|
|
|
|
|
|
simo1234, As mentioned above, the snow was really great over the weekend but as forecast the rain arrived heavily overnight on Sunday and yesterday morning when we left was really pouring down. I think the rain/snow limit was about 2400 metres so a bit grim. However, according to Chamonix meteo it looks as though temperatures may be falling again on Thursday and things can improve again very rapidly.

We've just arrived back through La Clusaz and over the Col des Aravis and everything looks fine! Because it's pitch black. You can see there's been a hell of a lot of snow here (particularly in our car park) but that it has taken a battering. We'll be going through La Clusaz a fair amount - though we're in Lyon Thurs-Mon - so happy to update if there's nobody else following the thread who's also out here. There is still some stuff on the ground at village level, some snow forecast for Thursday, plus La Clusaz aren't shy of whacking on the snow canons full blast and things look to be getting much colder (although drier) in a day or two, so keep the faith...

Any thoughts on snowboard schools out there in Grand Bornand?
Looking to book a 4 hour private lesson for my otherhalf (I'll probably take the last hour as she'll be tired)
She just needs a little help getting to grips with linking turns
They all seem around the same price
Aravis Ski Concept
www.aravis-concept.com
Have availability and can do the 4 hours at a cost of 145 euro.
ESF
www.esf-grand-bo.com
They have said to email them back a few days before we go as they wont know schedules until then,
Costs with them - 3 hours at 111 euro, or 4 hours at 148 euro
ESI – Ecole de Ski Internationale Starski
www.esi-starski.net
Could offer 2 hours at a cost of 65 euro , 10am till 12

Well, it is snowing at last... tiny flakes but lots of them. The snow canons have also been on overdrive... Drove over the col the other day and there was thin cover in La Clusaz but the snow canon pistes looked perfectly white amongst the patchy stuff...

Just back from dinner at La Ferme (right in the path of the snow canons, which were still on full blast)... 4 inches of natural stuff fell over the duration of the meal - dry and powdery

MazDave, you're in for a treat. On this side of the col (15 mins drive from La Clusaz) it stopped for about 10 mins, some blue sky arrived, I went and made myself a cup of coffee, came back into the living room and there was a total whiteout across the panoramic windows. Still snowing lightly now. Official snow-clearer says it's about 50cm here (1350m). It's really lovely snow too - this weekend should be fantastic for our first guests arriving tomorrow... shame some of them have already had their flights from Gatwick cancelled

Wahay - We're off to La Clusaz on Monday for a week.
We know LGB pretty well - have spent 4 weeks there in the last 2 years - but haven't been to La Clusaz for 8 years.
Any inside knowlege on La Clusaz would be appreciated, particularly ski areas and places to eat (with kids)

|
|
|
|

If skiing with children take the gondola from the town centre up to Beauregard - lots of nice rolling blues - good view of it on the La Clusaz webcam.
