Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Enjoyable stopovers in Germany

We will be driving home to the UK from the Paznaun valley on Boxing day this year, looking for any suggestions for stopover hotels around the Wiesbaden area which I estimate to be about 5+ hours drive. Have to get to ferry at Zeebrugge by the following evening, looking for somewhere friendly and characterful (since its Christmas!) Also somewhere where everything won't be shut for the holidays! Any hints, tips or suggestions most welcome. Thanks.

Wordbird, Rudesheim. It's a town on the Rhine Valley. Well known for the Drosselgasse with its wine bars and restaurants.

Wordbird, quite a lot of places will be shut as the whole of Germany has 2.5 days national holiday at Christmas. You would need to book in advance. Christmas Day and Boxing Day are when most of the Europeans start their journies so it isn't quiet on the roads. On the plus side, it means that there will be little or no HGV traffic.

Why are you selecting Wiesbaden? That route brings you through some of the worst sections of Autobahns in Germany for traffic jams. Have you looked at alternative routes from Zeebrugge? A report issued yesterday actually pointed to the Nord-Rhine-Westfalen area of Germany as being catastrophic in terms of the amount of time lost in traffic jams due to over-loaded roads. Nearly all of the area is undergoing major improvements, mostly road widening from 2-lane motorway to 3/4 lanes.

Thanks Samerburg Sue - not stuck on Wiesbaden - alternative might be Stuttgart, Karlsruhe, Mannheim using A61 further west. V happy to take advice on which is likely to be less painful! Did a similar journey last year and stayed in Rudesheim, v nice hotel there but reckon it will be dead on Boxing Day so wondering about a slightly bigger place! French route also a possibility with Langres stopover - just more expensive on tolls.
