Poster: A snowHead

I've just booked my first skiing holiday for the new year and now need to book my insurance. Any recommendations of comapnies to use and any advice on what I need to make sure is included / covered as I don't want to find myself in an emergency and realize my policy doesn't cover everything it needed to? For example when I brake my leg on the first day I want to know my insurance will cover me being flown home!!!

Millie10, if you've booked with a tour op you can usually take insurance from them as well. This may or may not be the best deal, but it saves you trawling through innumerable insurance companies and makes it easy for their staff to help you out in resort should you hurt yourself.

Lizzard, apparently the rules have changed this year, Wayne was teling me that there are all kinds of hoops to jump through to be able to offer insurance as part of a package so only the big conglomerates seem to be offering insurance for - smaller tour ops it just isn't worth the hassle

The best place to start (in my view at any rate) for any insurance is Money Saving Expert - http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/insurance/cheap-travel-insurance. They show some European cover including skiing for under £25 that meets various criteria, so well worth a look there I'd say.
I was going to waffle on a bit more but having seen the links from snowcrazy I think I'll not bother, it looks like enough has been said:-)

If you're skiing in France you might want to consider buying Carte Niege on top of your own insurance.

As it's your first skiing holiday, the majority of anything you find care of a Google search will cover you (i.e. you won't need additional off piste cover etc).
I've found that every year a different company seems to be the best value option. Just make sure you don't just go for the cheapest as some of the "basic" policies won't cover all elements that you could get included for a couple of quid elsewhere.
I've just purchased cover for a 6 day trip with MRL Direct (via insurefor.com) for £18. The way I always look is to run a Google search (other search engines are available ) and look at the policy breakdown to see how much you are covered for in each category and what is excluded. Then work out what you think offers best value.

Well that's debatable - if you ski between 2 pistes on a little cut through, even if only a few feet long, you are off piste. Because my kids love playing around on the bumps at the edge of the piste, the other side of the piste poles, I have off-piste cover as I am not taking the chances of not being covered.
Very possibly overkill but for the few quid extra worth it IMV

I've used Snowcard in the past (http://www.snowcard.co.uk/). They're reasonably priced and provide very good cover. Fortunately I've never had to use it! Friends tell me that Dogtag is pretty good (they've got adverts on this site, so just follow the link).
If you're a mountaineer, the BMC have good value insurance that provides very good cover.
My wife keeps telling me that our bank account provides insurance that covers us for skiing. I've never quite believed her so always buy it as well!

EvilWeevil, Your wife sounds very reasonable to me. Travel insurance comes with our bank account, though they only provide 21 days of winter sports coverage in a 12 month period, and it only covers us outside the UK. We've a charge card that also provides travel insurance, though only 120 consecutive days or 240 days in a year, but this coverage is world-wide. Both of these policies only cover off-piste with a guide. Additionally we carry private-health insurance that provides coverage world-wide excluding the USA. The few times we needed to use the health insurance abroad they've managed to arrange payment guarantees with the provider before we got there, or already had a relationship with the provider.

My OH tells me Snowcard is good - he had reason to use for concussion - bloodsled evac - before we were going out properly. No problems since. Seem well organised to me.
