Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Stopovers to Austria

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I'm driving to Obergurgl over Christmas from Dunkerque and need a stopover (not too expensive) about halfway ie after 5/6 hours of driving.

Last time I took the lower Belgium route which was fine - Any ideas?

If you use Google maps, set "Get directions" from Dunkerque, France to Obergurgl, Austria it will present you with a complete route and the directions.

You then enter "hotel" and all the hotels along the route will be flagged up. Zoom in any point and click the hotel links and you can, in many cases, the prices and availability. For each hotel you can get at least a email contact address or a complete book online facility.

You can also use Expedia.uk.co or booking.com to compare the price once you have identified the hotel.

If you want car parking, meals, breakfast etc the large hotel chains, like Accor, have all the information and do from 5 star to budget type like the "Formula 1" which is among the cheapest you can get.

griffterski, from Dunkirk I head east to Ostend and pick up the road to Brussels. Tend to stay in one of the Brussels Airport hotels - OK, not 5-6 hours into your journey but they have secure parking and there's nothing worse than going to bed wondering if your car full of gear is safe. The Ibis/Etap/Accor/Novotel lot are in Diagem just off the motorway and v easy to get a room if you just turn up.

By the way, and I love asking this, got your winter tyres sorted for Austria? Toofy Grin

griffterski, Look at Gasthofs around Merzig just over the border from Luxembourg and on the A8. That's about 4/5 hours from Dunkerque using the southern Belgium route via Luxembourg. Let me know by PM if you need help with the lingo wink

Bode Swiller, that route is just so old hat and you miss out on the cheap fuel in Luxy Toofy Grin

They have finished the missing section of the A8 to the border now. And more of the A8 in Bavaria is now 3 lanes (the big roadworks for the past couple of years). I can give a better description of the route and timings as I'm driving to and from Dunkerque next week. Looks like it will be including snow in one or both directions which might just mess up the schedule a wee bit!

Yes, I think the Romans liked it.

According to the AA's latest Fuel Price Report (http://www.theaa.com/onlinenews/allaboutcars/fuel/2010/october2010.pdf) average diesel price is 1.17 in Belgium and 1.01 in Luxemweird (OK, OK, I know you know this special little garage run by gnomes and elves that does it for fairy dust) but that represents an "incredible" saving of 9.60 Euros on an average 60 litre tank (I'll stick it in my pension). Then you'll point to the ever-so-slightly shorter journey but I'll point to the fewer interchanges and opportunities to get lost. So, all in all, I think the Romans had it about right. Possibly the only way we'll sort this is a race.

Bode Swiller, never mind - one day you'll be using round wheels instead square ones Laughing
