Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Tignes advice please

OK, after much consideration etc etc and my proposed 4 dayer to Kaprun having to go on hold for a funeral...... I have decided to try and get together a solo trip to Tignes 27/11-4/12. Never been to Tignes, never been alone!

Flights to Geneva - no prob
Bus transfer to Tignes - well, these work out more than the airfare and will have to wait around for a few hours at the airport but ho hum I guess.

Accommodation - unfortunately the MountainSun bootcamp is fully booked, so am looking at some small apartments in Val Claret. Just a bit wary of being in an apartment as I'll want to socialise a bit and I guess it's easier to meet people with a hotel bar. Is Val Claret the best place to stay? Any top tips on accommodation - what would others do? Where are the places to meet up for some good apres ski? Or just meeting others to perhaps ski with?

Any point considering a guide at all at this time of year?

Slightly anxious re spending the whole week on my own - much as I enjoy the odd halfday skiing away from the family, a whole week may be "interesting"

Cheers,
Rich

rich1, have you looked at the Alpaka. It has a very sociable bar, frequented by a few snowHeads, and is an good location in Tignes Le Lac for access to teh Aeroski gondola for the link to Val d'Isere and the Palafour chair for the skiing on the other side of the Tignes bowl. My preference is for Lac rather than Val Claret for apres ski.

rob@rar, Thanks - I literally had just sent them an enquiry but single occupancy is damaging of course - will see what they come back with

rich1, We will be out there then, taking advantage of the Mountainsun deal Smile so if you do get sorted I am sure that we could arrange a meet.
The Alpaka is a great place so hope they can help.

+ 1 for the Alpaka.....maybe they'd be prepared to do some sort of deal for a fellow snowhead. Otherwise, just wot rob@rar said.

Failing that, there is quite a nice apartment block just down the road from the Alpaka on the right heading towards the lake....IIRC it was either Yoda or Arno that put me onto it.......sorry, that's not much help. Maybe someone else knows the name of the place.

rich1, Hello, I was going to suggest UCPA but just checked and they aren't open that week in Tignes (seems odd for a glacier resort?)...but the centre in Val D'Isere is open. They even seem to have an airport transfer arrangement, their transfer from Geneva to Chamonix is only £49 return so I'm sure they'll do a good deal to Val.
I haven't been myself but have read some great reviews from Brits staying there, its very cheap and you get instant ski/board buddies.

I think it would probably be worth trying a guide (though it depends on snow depths, of course). There are several companies which will put you in with people of the same standard. Not sure who operate in Tignes - I'm used to Val d'Isere where TopSki and Alpine Experience are the best.

Are you sure a chalet won't suit you better? Are you against packages in principal?

Not against chalets/packages at all - hadn't considered a chalet as an alternative on my own! Any contacts?

I'd go with a chalet in that situation, we've had brilliant service at the Ski Olympic chalets in Tignes, and they will take individuals.

Worth a post to see if someone wants to buddy up for the week, will cut the single supplement, and give you someone to ski with. Plenty of others in the same situation.

Most of the Ski Package Companies (Crystal, Mark Warner etc) do chalets (just look at their brochures). I'm not up on who are the best now, but I used to go for that when I first took up skiing again and was on my own, before I went on Ski Club of GB holidays or had enough ski friends who I could make a party of my own from. Of course they will also offer transport (including the shuttle from the airport).
It used to be the case that a few of the companies would even find you room shares (so you avoided the single supplement), but I'm not sure who do that now - if any.

We must have been on an off night at the Alpaka last December. Almost empty at apres time and the few that were in were very chummy at the bar; I didn't feel all that welcome really. Sad I don't think I'll be rushing back

Hmmm, at the best of times, Tignes can be quiet at night.

Quite often, the bar at Les Melezes is the most lively place for miles. But if you think Le Lac can be quiet, Lavache or Val Claret can be totally without a pulse. Then on another night, totally by random, the place rocks.

Given the choice, it would have to be Le Lac to stay at and if the Loop bar or Alpaka are empty, you can always get the bus to Le Boisses and have a cheap drink(s) at Les Melezes.

bar shaker, good advice except that at the time the OP is going it will be at least a 15 euro taxi fare back up to the main villages as the bus stops pretty early. We loved the Loop for lunch and early apres, but again was pretty dead after dinner (about 12th December). it might have picked up again later in the evening but we'd moved on by then.

holidayloverxx, ah, do the buses stop early before Christmas? The run 'til midnight in January.

Taxis are eye wateringly expensive, if you can find one.

rich1 - try your namesake Richard @ snowstar who may be able to give you a room or male share in one of their chalets. One central to Le LAc and the other midway between lac and claret.
Also Alp-Line do shared transfers, worth a shot.

Just rang the Alpaka - they are closed that week for re-carpetting!!

HAve a couple of reasonable prices for Le Refuge & Le Gentiani which seem to be the best bet

Just booked an apartment in Le Lac for 27th-29th, (can't get more time off right now to stay the week unfortunately Sad ).

It's just 2 of us on a DIY trip. Would be good to meet up with anyone else around then.

Rich1, if you end up being alone on piste and want to meet up, just let me know. I would offer you a lift from Lyon Airport Friday night, but we have a tentative 3rd person, so not sure how much room will be in the car at the minute.

Sorted Very Happy

Flight booked.
Accommodation sorted - great deal at Dragon Lodge, along with transfer being arranged. I'll also mention that I spoke to Jill at The Alpaka (closed due to re-carpetting) and a lady at Ski Olympic (not open yet) both of whom were really helpful.

Marvellous - can't bloody wait

......now I'm sure I need some new gear wink
