Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Skiing Robots

The question arose as to whether Asimo, the robot mentioned in another thread ( http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?p=125695#125695 ) could ski. Apparently, he isn't that interested in skiing, but he has a baby brother, PSIman, who does quite well on the slopes:

EpicSki thread on PSIman here: http://forums.epicski.com/showthread.php?t=21644

Original movie here: http://ourworld.cs.com/BBRNZ/PSIMAN01.wmv

(Apparently this wmv file does not start automatically in some browsers - as a workaround, right click on the link, download and save the file to your own machine, and then it seems to work fine, assuming, of course, you have some application that can play wmv files.)

 Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

Physicsman, that 2nd link just gives me pages of gobbledeygook code stuff

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

kuwait_ian, let me check the link. In the meantime, I posed an animated GIF taken from Bob Barnes' wmv file that should be OK. Let me know if you can see it.

kuwait_ian, it plays for me in IE, but not with Foxfire. I think I know what's wrong and posted a workaround in my original post, right after I give the link. HTH,

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Physicsman, the GIF is fine. Is that a real film of a model in motion - there doesn't seem to be any room for any mechanism unless it's behind the badge. But we have no way of knowing how big the thing is. Nice parallel turns though - it'd be wild on carvers wink
<< Edit - when you see the original version you can see it being 'launched' and it is quite small >>

Yup, the model really skis and the beauty of this version is that there hardly is any mechanism to speak of - just joints and a high center of mass. There is lots of info on the Epicski thread that I reference. Look for posts by "T-square" for a good explanation of how it works.

As might be expected, the Japanese designed a much more thoroughly detailed model:

Amazing stuff, eh?

Doesn't play for me with IE. Here's the problem ........
The download has a .htm extension and Media Player expects a .wmv. Force it to open by telling it which app to use. Amazing. At the start of the clip you can see a glove and boot - so the gizmo is tiny.
Good stuff about it on the Epic link.
<< Edit - cross posting - TKS Tom - - - - the Japanese one is just incredible - but s/he drops the outside shoulder a bit on parallel turns. wink >>

Physicsman, cool!

It's sort of encouraging that a simple mechanical device with no brain can do a creditable impression of ski=ing, whilst I can't - maybe I'm thinking too much about stuff. I have to say the Japanese robot looks awfully anxious.

Ian Hopkinson, why do you put an = sign in skiing. Maybe this is part of your problem ???? wink

kuwait_ian, So . . . what you're say is, all one needs to ski well are wide hips, a fat butt and no brains?
I'd keep your head down for a little while Twisted Evil

 snowHeads are a friendly bunch.
snowHeads are a friendly bunch.
Masque, not at all - I'm advocating slim hips, legs locked, wide shoulders, DD cup and brains not too relevant. See here .....

And for the men, a big heavy back pack.
It was Hoppo who started the no brain idea - not me.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

I saw a version of that thing at the Munich ski trade fair about 15 years ago. It was tiny (no more than about 7cm tall) and did lovely parallel turns down a smooth ramp. Mesmerising!

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

I doesn't play because the muppet has misconfigured his web server which says that the file is a Web page not a WMV file.
