Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

A short trip for beginners!

Hi

Following all your help last year, I am back again! A friend and I, each with about a week's experience - so basically beginners - are looking to go away for a few days mid Jan. I have found convenient flight timings for Salzburg, Geneva, Turin and Munich. I want something preferably within about an hour to an hour and halfs distance, and accessible by public transport (train if poss). As we are beginners we would like a small resort to keep the lift prices down. We don't need access to hundreds of km of runs, as we are not very good, and usually just go up and down the same one and it seems a shame to pay for more!! Also, we don't really want to go to Germany. I don't know if these requests are a bit too specific!

Thanks for all your help

munchimo, the world's your oyster, really. Salzburg, Geneva and Turin all have great options fairly close, if you don't want to go to German.

Watch out for your flights - anything other than weekend flights could give you some problems finding accommodation, but mid January is a quiet time to go.

Unless you are desperate to arrange it all yourself you will almost certainly find some good tour operator bargains nearer the time, as there are just two of you and you are flexible about destination.

You will find transfers to some resorts quite expensive, even by public transport. Another advantage of going with a tour opertor.

If you are not very good and just go up and down the same run you might also have a lot more fun if you have lessons - best way to improve.

Hi - yes we are definitely planning lessons! As we want to go Sun-Tue/ Wed, I think tour operator deals are quite hard to find?

munchimo, sorry, didn't cotton on to that bit. Yes, you won't find deals easily - or at all - for a few days, except from the specialist weekend operators. But it is a quiet time - and it should be easy enough to get some private lessons, which are the best sort. There are a number of people on Snowheads who have chalets etc and who can sometimes do flexible deals and could advise on lessons etc. and conditions locally.

Try this one, for example - http://www.austrian-adventures.com/

near to Salzburg. I've not been there but a number of people have, see http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?p=1627698

I'm sure you'll get some other suggestions too, but for a short trip you do need to be as close to the airport as possible, not to waste your precious time.

Hi Munchimo...
Take a look at http://www.skiweekender.com - specialists in short breaks just an hour away from Geneva in French resorts of La Clusaz and Grand Bornand. Good resorts for beginners and intermediates...
Can also help with lessons etc.

Good luck

munchimo, St Jean D'Aulps may be a good idea for you. It's a small resort near Morzine, but not linked to the Portes du Soleil. It's own ski area is about 35km which should be plenty for what you are looking at, and consequently keep the costs down. I have been there as an experienced skier, but with my own beginner children and another beginner family. There are a number of independent chalets in that area, which would be able to offer a short break, as well as help with transfers from Geneva. Drop me a PM if you'd like the contact details of the chalets - British-owned and run so no language difficulties (well, one of the owners is Welsh......)

Have a look at Pila, its not far from Turin and in true italian form most of the slopes, inlcuding the reds are very easy, its tree lined, fairly quiet, food and wine pretty decent prices and lift pass won't set you back too much, January is classed as low season, 2 days pass is 64 euros.......plus you can stay down in Aosta; you get the cable car upto pila 2000 and there are plenty of hotels down in Aosta that will take bookings for any length 1 night/2 nights/whatever all at decent prices....

if you just google 'hotels aosta' plenty should come up!

Oh, do NOT be bothered about the number of red runs, anywhere else in the world they would be classed as blues, and in some cases even greens....... this is often the case in italian resorts!

cbowls30, Excellent suggestion in my view. Pila is a great place for early ski experience and pushes all the right buttons for access and hotel availability. Nice place to ski, but small!
