Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Obertauern - ski school and general advice

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hello there

I am in the process of arranging a DIY trip to Obertauern at Christmas. We are a group of four - three intermediates (although I haven't skied for eight years) and one beginner. I'm keen that the beginner gets into the ski school used by the major tour operators (Inghams and Thomson are the only ones going to Obertauern I think) so she is more likely to have an English-speaking instructor and make some friends. Does anyone know which school the TOs use?

Also, any advice on hotels would be appreciated. I've been looking at the Latschenhof and the Petersbuhel, and possibly the Hotel Steiner if we can afford it.

Thanks in advance

Marshboy,

Welcome to snowheads.

Not sure who the tour operators use but these links may help ....

Had a quick look at the ski schools and these two were the only ones I could find in English & German. All the rest were only in German.

Staying in the centre in great but expensive. There are a few places to stay away from the main stretch which are much more reasonable.

Marshboy,

All the ski schools will have English speaking instructors. I really like Obertauern, but 2 of the ski schools there have managed to "lose" my 5 year old daughter. Once on the mountain and the other dropped my daughter off, alone, in our hotel after we had arranged to meet elsewhere. Complained and had the lesson for free. wink I would try the Krallinger Ski school (purely on the grounds that they DIDN'T lose any of my children!!)

I would recommend staying near the Edelweiss or Gamsleiten lifts, where everything you need is nearby and you'll be able to ski back (more or less) to you hotel.

Hywel and DB, thank you.

I had a look in the good ski guide at the weekend which said that the Krallinger school was 'favoured by the tour operators' so we may well go with them.

Marshboy, we really enjoyed Obertauern, 12 of us, a mixed group and we stayed at the Petersbuhel, you can just about ski back although you need plenty of snow because the last bit is on the road. Petersbuhel generally excellent, v. friendly but no pool which was about the only drawback. There is a limited vertical but plenty of variety, I prefered the resort to Obergurgl which has double the vertical. Snow is always plentiful but the resort is prone to bad weather/wind/whiteouts, if you get some sun it's fantastic. Apres is lively in the Umbrella bars from 4.00-7.00 and then it dies down quickly. Night skiing once a week.
