Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Driving back from France on Christmas Day

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Our normal last day routine is to clear the apartment, ski all day, then drive to Chambery/Grenoble, eat at Flunch and do a supermarket stop before driving through the night back to Calais/Dunkirk.

Question is will supermarkets and fast food restaurants be open at all on Christmas Day in France?

I presume the motorway services will be operating as normal?

Layne, supermarkets not normally open (though smaller ones in resort could be), couldn't say about fast food outlets. Fuel stations were certainly open for us 2008, so I expect the other bits would be too.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Supermarkets in resort (Les Arcs) were open last Christmas Day, but for a few hours in the morning only.

Layne, the motorway service areas should all have fuel, possibly limited food service I would think, but I'd be surprised if either Flunch or supermarket were open in the evening.

Usually we buy stuff that we like, is cheap, can't get at home in the supermarket. A little Brucie Bonus when we get home. So may have to forego that this time. Possibly more concerned about the eating situation. As normally it works well to get out of the mountains on to the main roads, feed the kids up so they sleep, and a break for daddy and mummy before the motorway drive. I have got a feeling service stations might be the best or only bet, although I guess proper restaurants will be open even if the fast food joints aren't?

I'd guess not, actually, outside resorts - but it is just a guess. Someone who knows better might be along soon. But eating in motorway service stations is generally OK.

I'm sure the boulangerie will be open in the morning, so it wouldn't be beyond the wit of man to keep some Jambon et Fromage from the day before and Robert est votre oncle pères

Layne, out of resort, nothing will be open. You can forget Flunch, and if you want supermarket goodies you will have to get them in resort or zap down to the valley on/before Christmas Eve (shops usually open until 19:30).

Motorway services, on the other hand, will be running as normal. (And their staff, like me, will be on double time. Cool )

If I were you I'd shop in resort or - if there isn't enough choice/you don't like the prices - nip down to the valley during the week. I'd then eat at the first motorway services (food usually Flunch style/quality if not as cheap), tuck the anklebiters up and carry on as usual.
