Just been in touch with a collegue in the south of france
Her response was interesting:
Thanks very much.
Actually, the temperatures here have fallen down to 3 degrees in the morning, which is very surprising for this time of the year. Usually we still wear tee-shirts in October. As I can see the Pyrenees from my house, I can confirm there is already some snow on top of the mountains ! Do you plan to go skiing when in Pau ?
Kind regards.

kevindonkleywood, I think we're all getting much the same Arctic air flow. It'll probably be back to warmer, damp, south-westerlies before long.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Yup, snowed lightly here for most of the last two days, but I'm fully expecting it all to disapper again before the real snow arrives. Still plenty of mountain-biking to be done!

That would be sweet if this is an early harbinger of more good things to come. Two of those photos are on the list of places to ski this winter!

If it helps, a few of the trees around campus have shed their leaves a lot earlier than I have noticed in previous years

At this time of year the snow coming and going is part of the natural cycle of cooling the ground down, it's nothing to worry about and rest assured the snow will be back sooner or later

You know it makes sense.

An interesting article from the annual survey of Arctic ice is suggesting that the unusually fast melting seen last year, and this, was (counter intuitively) responsible for last years extreme weather in US and Europe and the same situation pertains now.

Timbobaggins, if the Dartmouth Ring Tailed Tree Warblers fly to Outer Mongolia to get away from the cold then I think think they have been misinformed somehow!

Timbobaggins, -32 is only on warm days in Outer Mongolia. That's either one stupid bird, or it's one tough bird and should be called Djingis Ring Tailed Tree Warbler.
