Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

How about "Is side slipping (or side sliding if you prefer) a high-level technique?"

On Dendix our "intermediate" skiers are able to control their descent using plough turns, basic swings (or plough-parallel if you prefer), and basic parallel turns, mixing and matching depending on their skill level.

But can they use both feet/ankles to initiate a side slip whilst moving and continue to slide in a chosen direction? Not a hope. "One footedness" inevitably rears its ugly head. If they're lucky it's the top ski that gets left behind or drifts off in unpredictable directions. Why do they find it so hard when it feels like the easiest thing in the world to me?

(Prompted by the Stoat's "Turn on the bump and side slip down the back side" comment on the other thread". By coincidence I was trying that with a group last night - but stopped after the second attempt ended with A over T and a sore thumb for someone (OK thank heavens). )

shoogly, that there are plenty of SH's who have little to no interest in ski technique who feel the need to enter threads that talk about ski technique and berate those who do... it always seems slightly odd to me that on a skiing based internet forum it is uncool to talk about skiing technique or how skiing works

Actually, I have yet to master the technique of getting up from a fall, either on a flat piste or in deep snow. I think I must have unusually puny arms (can't do press-ups) and wish there was some sort of magic technique. I've tried the crossed ski sticks thing in deep snow, but still find it hard. So, maybe this would be a valid topic? Toofy Grin

Flat piste AND deep snow is a killer. You either need to dig a hole until you reach solid ground or wait until spring when the snow all melts Very Happy

Hurtle, I too struggle in this department, I think its lack of flexiblilty, coupled with being top heavy. I'm pretty good at press-ups so not sure its that, maybe our arms are too short? Wink

Hurtle, you need a bloke to pull you up... Toofy Grin

skimottaret, part of the problem might have been the rather dogmatic attitude that some instructors here have taken to problems - even when they have been shown comprehensively to be talking pants. Also it can become a teensy bit geeky sometimes. And skiing is such a kinasethetic and visual thing that talking about it can seem a bit like painting about music or cooking about art.

But anyway - long live the newly reborn BZK. Toofy Grin

tiffin, not lack of flexibility in my case, nor am I particularly top-heavy. I do have short arms, though. I think it's sheer lack of upper body strength.
