Poster: A snowHead

Hello all,
On January 8th I'm off to Banff for 13 weeks to complete my CSIA 1 & 2 and do a few other things.
Hopefully someone on here can help as I'm struggling to find appropriate insurance, as we will be skiing
On/off piste, backcountry tours etc.
Many policies I've found only cover trips upto 31 days in length.
Can anyone recommend a good insurer to go with for the 13 weeks I'm away?
Many thanks for any suggestions

Snowcard also cover long trips.
Insuring for off piste is quite a controversial subject as you'll see if you have a look at some of the previous threads on the subject...

Tintin, the single trip Dogtag cover with very long winter sports is very expensive (I've just been checking, for a single trip of 70 days for us it costs as much as the top level of Ski Club of Great Britain cover for the whole year). The annual dogtag is no good for anyone doing more than 31 days of winter sports across the whole year (not on any one trip). I'm too old for the backpacker insurance (limit 35 years) but that would no doubt be cheaper.
You could have a look at the Ski Club, or British Mountaineering Council cover.
Unfortunately any policy which covers both longer trips AND a lot of winter sports is very expensive (naturally enough). If you find anything good, post it here. I don't need anything other than medical - I'm not bothered about lost stuff, missed departures etc etc but it's the medical element which costs the money.

BMC full year round cover, £200 ish. I don't think that is bad at all. I broke a bunch of ribs in Aspen a couple of years back, Aspen is a town know for taking only local insurance but they took BMC..
So a company that has the cover and pays out.. is a winner in my book. That said I have no experience with any other insurance company, so can't compare, but so far have had no reason to change from BMC who are obviously a good choice!

Thanks for all the replies!
I have checked Dogtag and had a quote however for my purpose it seems it is very expensive even for the basic
Cover. I am going to get a quote with the BMC as they may be able to cater for my needs. Either way once I've got insurance I'll post it here with all the details!

Hi Tintin, welcome to Snowheads. You going with Snowskool? My son did the course last year and is now living in Banff. You'll have an absolute ball! He got his cover with the BMC and they have been very good - two claims for medical bills fully paid quickly with no hassle. He's going to renew with them in the new year so would recommend them. Enjoy your course and go see Tom at Norquay - he's snowboard tutoring!

BMC is the way to go unless you're a BASI member.

This must be the forth or fifth thread about ski insurance already since September. Maybe admin would like to make a sticky where all these questions can be posted together rather than repeat what has been posted before.
Tintin, Have a look at my facebook group under discussions 'Ski and Snowboard Wiinter Sports Insurance' where the policy wording of a number of companies has been posted. Could save you a lot of time.

My conclusion so far is that none of the policies are very good as they all use very clever wording to get out of a claim should they choose too. I still plan to post a summary of all the policy wordings once available. From what others have told me it appears very hard to get the underwriters to commit to anything in writing despite the law which requires them to do so. Hope that helps.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Biddy Twiddle, I'm going to Banff with snowskool! I know this is a little forward but would your son mind if I sent him an email regarding snowskool/life in Banff? it'd be good to have some inside knowledge!
As far as the insurance goes I'm going to read through the information snowcrazy has linked me to and make an informed decision in the next couple of days. As snowcrazy said no single insurer will be perfect as underwriters have clauses to get out of many claims!

snowcrazy, I think a single thread lumping together all discussions about insurance could be very unwieldy. There are differences in what people want - this was a specific query which is looking for very different information from, for example, someone going on a series of short holidays during a year.

You know it makes sense.

snowcrazy, I'm afraid the last paragraph of your post is par for the course with any insurance firm. I was working for a law firm specialising in personal injury last year and it quickly became clear that the wordy policy statements inherent in most insurers' T&Cs will void a high proportion of valid claims - thus creating the work for solicitors as the 'lay' man or woman is unable to navigate a way around it.
