Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

graeme, most resorts lift systems will be open by 2nd week of December, with the high resorts (VT for example) open a few weeks earlier. It CAN be a risk as it's relatively early, but there are many places within the PdS, Tarentaise and 3 Valleys which would have decent snow by the end of December. Might depend on what you want - high altitude, pretty well guaranteed snow cover, open lifts but lacking in charm or festive atmosphere, or lower altitudes, good chance of skiable snow, open lifts and more in the way of character and charm. Puzzled

In fact, don't bother. Snow cover at Christmas is hugely variable. 2 years ago, across much of the Alps, it was spiffing, but 3 years ago it was poor - just a couple of runs open in the entire Courchevel valley IIRC and green green grassy slopes in many lower resorts in France and Austria.

By far the best bet for a Christmas holiday is to book it on about 16th December, when you will have a reasonable idea (though even then...... 3 years ago the early December cover was spectacular, but it melted and many resorts had bucketsful of rain at Christmas.

I have only ever been away at xmas or just before.

Having said that, I have only ever been skiing in North America. Not had a problem with the snow cover at that time of year.

My advice would be to go high.
