Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Pre-season has just opened on the Grand Motte glacier in Tignes. Amazing conditions for September. Perfect piste snow and very quiet on the slopes with just a few race clubs and a handful of recreational skiers. Some photos from today:

Some more photos from today and from the next week or so will be posted here.

No, there's no snow to speak of below 2500m and not skiable below the glacier. But on the glacier is lovely Happy

Most tour operators specialising in family holidays would be interested in employing a qualified nurse. What about you?

Snow conditions remain good and it was sunny this morning, but got a little cloudy this afternoon and we had a little bit of fresh snow.

rob@rar, On your firsts photo Wed Sept 29th I notice that on the extreme right there are are some tracks marked out in the snow. Having passed them a few times when skiing in Tignes I've often wondered what they are - I've been told that they are x-country tracks are they? and if not can you shed any light?

The tracks are for autumn cross country training. Lots of teams will be in Tignes soon for pre season high altitude training.
If the weather is bad the teams 'time trial' from Bourg st Maurice. This entails racing from Bourg to Tignes, approx 29km, up the mountain road on roller skis. rolling eyes

Hi Guys,
I been looking to go on a ski course last week Nov or first week December, I am always a little concerned about ski conditions early season having been to Verbier once, with only two piste open! Crying or Very sad In general how much gets opened in Tignes first weeks of the season and is the off piste worth doing (without wrecking skis on rocks)!

Thanks

Neil

Impossible to answer as early snow can vary from excellent to poor. Last few opening weekends (last weekend in November) have enjoyed excellent early season snow so majority of the pistes have been open despite the resorts being very quiet. Off-piste that early in the season is always going to be a risk as the snowpack depth has had no time to build up, so even a dump of fresh snow which opens up off-piste opportunities isn't going to save you from crunching into rocks from time to time.

Slightly busier over the weekend with a few more race clubs, but the glacier is still very quiet. It was very windy today, and the Grand Motte cablecar closed at about 2.00pm as it was waving around too much. Piste conditions are mostly great, but Rosolin (which opened yesterday) is a bit lumpy and has too many ice cookies around. Other than that there are no complaints!

Grrr. If the doc says tomorrow I'm ok without a knee op, I might have to do an extra early season special weekend just because of this thread. Cycling two hours today felt fine.

CSki, that's nice form!
