Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Has anybody seen the cheap mens skis posted on ebay (from France apparently)?
Most are scratched up, but still, for under £100...who cares?

I bought a pair of scott neo's from one of the french retailers, shortly after joining these forums. Bear in mind that the photo's show the skis in optimum lighting and quite often it is very difficult to spot chips, gouges, missing bits of topsheet etc from the photo's especially when you have bargain blindness goggles on. They do offer refunds if you are unhappy but the postage costs are high so it's probably not worth it, for what you're paying. I remember being a little dissapointed when opening the box and seeing what could only be described as a pair of skis that had seen heavy consistent hire use for at least one season.

That said I rate my Neo's and have put them through abuse that my conscience wouldn't allow me to inflict on new skis. In some ways that has helped my development a little, and kept my "good skis" in better condition then they might otherwise be. Whilst looking like cr@p the performance is still there and they are still a half decent ski. The advantages of these skis are that there is zero chance of anyone wanting to steal them Toofy Grin but if your friends like and can afford the latest gear you will be endlessly ridiculed.

My advice is to check the classifieds section on here and other forums as snowheads have some exceptional bargains that come up from time to time, and you can more or less guarantee that they will be in excellent condition and well looked after, even if they have had a hard life.

ski's generally on ebay are a very risky proposition - I would only now look at ex-demos and generally would travel to inspect them before committing to a purchase.

I think but would need other more knowledgeable snowHead to confirm that a lot of the hire gear, such as K2 Apache Rentals are beefed up and much heavier versions of the Recons so that they can handle the endless tuning/grinding needed to keep them functional through a season of heavy use. If you are planning to buy do your research first.

Liquidationsports is Seattle has some great bargains and will even go out back to sort through the best skis avaialble. Really nice people but shipping costs to the UK make it utterly uneconomical + tax etc. If, however you are in the US, it's pretty easy to get them delivered at cheap domestic USPS rates to you hotel/bring back used within your allowance. Cool

ALQ, Unless you know what you're buying (i.e. you know that they're a model you want and you know their provenance), I wouldn't touch them.

I've seen lots of skis on eBay that look as though they were found in a deceased relatives shed and presumed to have value. Sadly skis are not like recreational drugs (which is what all the eBay fuss is about, isn't it?) and anything older than about 10 years is pretty much worthless (unless you're founding a ski museum).

Anything that a hire shop is selling off has no value to them which suggests no value to you either.

Plenty of online bargains out there for brand new kit...

Yeah ebay is a bit of a nightmare for purchasing stuff. Particularly used items because my definition of 'in good condition' is slightly different to those who are listing! Some sellers are alright but I would steer clear of ex rental stuff particularly from France where servicing tends to be grinding the ski down for fun.

Motions,funnily enough I picked up a pair of mint (2 weeks powder use in Zermatt) Salomon X-wing Fury's for £120 delivered on ebay Embarassed . They came from a good home and I was perhaps very lucky, but providing you do you homework first or buy from a trusted SH, you at least have a chance! Cool

Boredsurfing, I have a couple of pairs of the old ali poles, big baskets and small leather grips picked up with 2 sets of the old Kastles on EBay for £1 a pair!!!

Late August found a pair of the very old red, thin X-country skis outside a block of flats by the bins in Geneva which isn't unusual. Picked these up as and now nicely crossed on our balcony.

I'll keep a look out for bamboo poles: Cool Cool

My OH made a pair - they're very convincing. The distressing process included leaving them submerged in the mud at the bottom of our creek for a week. He got some funny looks going into a hobby shop and buying the embroidery hoops he used for the baskets.

I bought a pair of Elan speedwaves from a rental shop in Austria, through e-bay.

All I can advise is buyer beware, they were absolute junk, that must have been trashed for more than a couple of seasons at least. They were very mis-leading in there description, but as ledge, says the returns procedure is challenging to say the least.

I wouldn't recommend it at all, made me feel like a right front bottom Embarassed
