Ok, a slight bit of new kit syndrome here, but.....
I have 92mm under foot High Society skis as a ski anywhere ski, in a typical *very* good year for me, my trips may consist of:
Jan: European 4 nights boys trip, off piste every day if safe enough, no matter what the off piste is like, we will ski it, (obviously within reason)
April: European Family ski trip, will be a mixture of off piste/piste and cruising with the kids
Depending on conditions and diary I may also sneak a day or two somewhere if I have meetings in Geneva and a 2 day trip to Scotland is also possible if conditions warrant it.
So I was then considering a 'fun' off piste weapon to add to my quiver, spurred on by the recent thread about inserts that would allow me to move my Dukes around..
My assumptions are as I have a mid fat, I may as well get something >= 115mm underfoot, and why not try a fully rockered ski as well, but with some sidecut for getting to/from places on piste.
So questions in my mind
1. Would I get enough use out of them in Euro land in a typical season?
Which if the answer is yes, what skis should I be looking at? any big end of season bargains around?
The Whitedot Redeemer is obviously high on the list to think about...
Cheers,
Greg

Prophet 115's would be a good shout! they felt pretty good everywhere for a fatty! I've got the bacons my self and are great fun but a little soft for blasting around!
Atomic Bent Chetler is pretty hard to beat out of the twin rockers as well, really good fun ski, if you don't fancy something that wide then the blog is pretty similar in shape just 110 underfoot (and looks nicer)

I think there's a progression with wider skis - I started on the old Mothership Ti about 6 years ago at 97mm, found I could use them anywhere and really enjoyed them. In fact they've now been converted to a predominantly indoor tele ski. Last year I moved up to 110-112 waisted skis and found they were great where I was skiing them (Sierra cement and US west coast "pow") and the Redeemer was a revelation on big days. I've not skied the Redeemer in Europe where conditions can go to poo-poo after a couple of weeks with no snow mid-winter so I'd tend to think of them as a big day/day after/ Spring corn ski. If you're jumping from 92 it might take some adjusting so I'd think 110ish with some rocker might be a good step. I think the whitedot guys are considering a Skinnydeemer for the all mountain Euro market for 2012.

kitenski, you could push it higher than 115 under foot with the Movement Flyswatters at 125 under foot, they are incredible off piste and also so much fun on piste, I have been playing with them for a few weeks now and seem to want to stay on them all the time rather than going back to my 94 under foot skis.
I agree with fatbob, regarding the progression, however i think the sidecut of the ski comes into the equation as well, the flyswatter comes in at 150x125x145, so gives a turn radius of only 17m
we have a review and test info on our web site for more info.

I'm in exactly the same boat, with 92mm Big Troubles as my everyday ski (although I get more skiing time lol), skis that I'm considering are Moment Bibby Pro (which I'm leaning towards atm), Moment Night Trains, 0N3P Billy Goat, Atomic Bent Chetler, Rossi S7, 4FRNT Renegade/EHP (possibly too straight to be truly versatile for me), Whitedot Redeemer, PM Gear Lhasa Pow (which there's no way I can afford) and DPS Wailer 112RP (which there's no way I can afford). If I had the dosh I would get the DPS. I suppose you could also chuck the new K2 ObSETHed in there,, but I'm not a fan of K2.
Quite a list there for you!! Try deciding between those!
fatbob, A Skinnydeemer (around 115mm underfoot) would have been perfect for me, and could (maybe lol) persuade me to hold onto my cash for another year...

Not convinced simply narrowing dimensions of skis makes them a great idea, I get the feeling if you want a "skinnydeemer" you should just sort your life out and buy the ski that was actually built in the Redeemer. It's shaped that way, and that fat, for a reason. Always confuses me when skiers demand a random untested rebuild of an exsisting ski they haven't actually tried rather than an alternative - see TGR's instant demand for a 202 DPS 112RP which just seemed ridiculous.

clarky999, lots a very nice skis on that list.
I can confirm we are playing with a similar (please note Davec I said similar) ski to the Redeemer prob about 107 underfoot.

DaveC, I really like Whitedot as a company, and would like to support them, but I guess none of their current skis quite (seems, anyway) to fill the rather specific niche in my quiver... I will def be testing the Redeemers if I get a chance though.
kitenski, lot's of reviews on TGR of skis you may be interested in: http://www.tetongravity.com/forums/showthread.php?t=104129

Dot., what I meant is that people should trust the designers and the ski they've put R+D into rather than deciding it'd be better a bit thinner or whatever without actually trying the ski as intended. I do like the idea.

Call me cynical but have you ever seen a reviewer who has paid hard cash for a ski say "it's cr*p"?
Question to everyone else, how many folk with >= 115mm underfoot ski used it in Europe in the past few seasons, and in what kind of conditions?
regards,
Greg

kitenski, I agree, but TGR are probably the least biased. A lot of skis change hands cheaply and enter the "community" cheap ish through a few routes, and lots of people have skied a fair few different skis. The other thing that reviews are frustrating for is you tend to have no clue how good the skier actually is.

DaveC, yeh I guess so, however there most be skis folk really didn't get on with, where are those kind of reviews???

Careful, you'll get Bobinch all glassy eyed about Volkl Kuros in a minute. Have you read his TR's?

DaveC, I wasn't suggesting it would be a better ski, just may have been better for me... there's a difference. I'm sure they have built the ski that they want, and certainly lots of people seem to love it the way it is.
kitenski, obviously take them with a pinch of salt, but they're less biased than the magazines, and I can't think of anywhere else where there are such a number of reviews on relatively 'specialist' skis. Also a few reviews have been written after test rather than purchases.

When I was out with the WSA lot last year in Japan, our Instructor was moaning that he didn't get on at all with the lightly rockered Katana/Gotama (whatever he was on) that he'd taken over there, cos he didn't like the flappy tips. He wanted his Mantras back!

kitenski, I have Redeemers and Preachers, used for about 5 days each last season (out of a total 55 days, all in Europe), but only got them in the second half of the season. Based on this, I'd expect to ski on something >=112mm at least 30% of the time. The rest of the time is spent on around 90mm waist for mixed piste/off-piste days. I think if you have them, then you'll look for every opportunity to use them. Hope this helps.

kitenski, RPF had Redeemers and raved about them, Gorilla had Lhasa Pows and liked those, Horizon had some Skinny skis (90mm) has seen the light and bought 2 sets of fatties. Another mate had Last years Gotamas and is talking about getting something fatter because he could see the fun we were having. Did I mention the Kuros? If you've got 92mm skis buy something wide and rockered so when there is a powder day you can really enjoy it!

kitenski, As you and others will know I'm a big fan of long, fat skis. When we skied together I was not expecting deep deep pow so I had my 13s - rockered tip and 115mm underfoot, they slay everything - pow, pistes, bumps - well, you saw them getting skied. If was deeper that day I would have skied something wider like the Redeemers (which I actually had in the car if you remember).
If you are trying to cover off deep pow (and yes, there are loads of days in Europe that warrant it) then get something BIG - Faction Royales or WDF Redeemer would be at the top of my list. Or you could sell all of your other skis and get either the new Faction 3.Zero that has tip rocker, or the rockered Alias. The 3.ZeroR is a one ski quiver, the Alias I would probably team up with a powder ski like the Royales or the Redeemers...
One of the answers to your questions though, is yes, big skis in Europe are worth it...

parlor, do you reckon the Redeemer would have skied ok on that day we skied together?
|

kitenski, it would have been pretty cool. Fantastic in the Freeride Zone once they dropped the rope - and easy to traverse on unlike some big pow skis. First thing it would have been 'exciting' on the groomers but by the end of the day (when everything warmed up) it would have been really good everywhere.

kitenski, no question, the Redeemers. I'm sure the FRs were OK all over the place, but the Redeemers would have been awesome in the soft stuff. Don't be scared of the 190 label, I'm still pushing for a 205cm version - it skis short for sure.
