I have done a forum search for any info on the Katschberg ski area Austria without any success.
Any useful info i should be aware of?
We are staying at the Funimation Hotel, how is the access regards ski in ski out? Access to nursery pistes?

I went there for a few days skiing last Febuary with my family. I was very impressed with the resort -family freindly, excellent resurants, efficient lift system and though there were a couple of T-man’s the mainly intermediate slopes were stunning though quite short. Out favorate runs were the ones down to St Margarethen im Lungau. I don’t know the hotel you mention but the village is placed fairly high up with slopes running off either side. We went by car and therefore explored the whole valley and the ski area – which is well worth the extra effort.

griffterski, Thanks, i think those 2 drags back up from St Margarethen have been replaced this summer. I guess you had kids with you? how old and how much experience do they have?
Are there any free nursery slopes in the village to get my youngest interested?

You're right however there was a very new efficient and quick system from St Margarethen to Aineck. The resturant half way down that slope was excellent by the way at the start of lift 13. I'm afraid my kids (adults) were 18,17 and 15 and had been skiing since they were 4/5.
Certainly in the main Katschberg village area there seemed some excellent beginners slopes I'm not sure if they were free however. I was taken with the whole area and certainly having taken young-uns previously it seemed extremely kid friendly - in fact I'd say that it is an ideal area for children and a relaxing family holiday. We loved it there , one of our best holidays yet, having previously skied mainly in France and fully intend to return perhaps even this year.

Wow, that is just what i was hoping to hear about the kid friendly aspect.
Great to see that from someone who seems to have skied extensively to say one of the best holidays is fantastic.
I have mostly skiied in France but have fallen out of love with it after going to Saalbach back in March.
Austria for me all the way now.

Went there a few years ago (well actually 10 years ago) with the Austrian school I used to teach at on a school ski trip. Obviously lifts etc. will have been upgraded since then, but I would second the family/kid-friendly aspect. The village is smallish and cute and Austrian looking/feeling, and the slopes really surround the village from both sides, so nowhere is very far from the skiing. Great facilities for kids and beginners, and when they're a bit more confident, skiing over to St Michael is a bit of an adventure.
In fact I had forgotten about 'Katschi' a little bit but now you have reminded me it strikes me as the perfect place to take Babyskis when he/she is ready to venture onto the snow!
It's also a very pretty area with great views and lots of tree-lined pistes as well as the more exposed higher areas on the St Michael hill, so it's just overall a nice place to be.
I don't think the village is totally traffic free, but once people arrive, they don't tend to move their cars until they leave as everything is so close by, so it feels pretty traffic free really.
Ski area is not as big as Saalbach obviously, but it is a fun and nice area to ski.

Went there a while ago around, maybe 93/94. I remember it being cold and had the nickname austrian siberia.

creedgearoid, sorry I meant St Margareten. Twas a long time ago when I was there and I was on a school ski trip so just followed the leader!
Although looking at the piste map, it looks like S1 now goes very to close to St Michael but probably only in good conditions!

Deliaskis, creedgearoid, after these comments i am so pleased i have booked both this hotel and area.
i hadnt realised that there were other ski areas so close. I will have a hire car so will probably check out at least st michael although it does look like the ski bus covers it. If my mates decide to come it will be good for them to have a bit further to play in if i am with my family.creedgearoid, i will definitely post up a resort review when i get back. it is just so frustrating, i am already counting the days.

I'ts definately worth checking out the St Micheal (Grosseck Spieireck) area though it's not quite as slick and child friendly as Katschberg (but cheaper). Very easy to get to by bus or car (10 mins)and the car parking is free too - just unload your skis put on your boots and ... ski. Fanningberg is not bad either though the smaller of the three areas.
Obertauern is about 20 mins away by car again free car parking right by the slopes - by bus it takes 40 mins with a change in Mauterndorf. Obertauern is a superb ski area but is perhaps a bit big and intimidating for very young children just learing - when my kids started they liked familier slopes which they could attempt again and again. Certainly it's worth your mates going up the valley to Obertauern tell them to have a go at piste 26a the Gamsleiten Bahn 2 lift- just talking about it makes me want to dust off the credit card and book a trip.

) and even the snack we got during the day was prob better than some of the evening meals we have had in other resorts/hotels. the hotel is at the base of the aineck mountain so kill your speed at the end of the run as you may ski tru your bedroom window if your not careful 
. have been looking at getting back there to ski some day and really interested to hear the other reports above.
